Tourism potential in Cao Minh

Cao Minh is one of the most remote communes in the northern part of the province, bordering Cao Bang and Tuyen Quang provinces. It is home to many ethnic minority groups, such as the Mong, Tay, Dao, Nung, and San Chi, with the Mong accounting for nearly 52% of the population. The diversity of traditional cultures of these ethnic groups gives Cao Minh great potential for developing community-based and experiential tourism.

Cao Minh commune was established by merging three administrative units: Cong Bang, Co Linh, and Cao Tan. The locality still preserves many important tangible and intangible cultural heritages, including the Luon Coi folk song of the Tay people and the Khen dance of the Mong people, which have been recognized as national intangible cultural heritage.

The commune's cultural clubs maintain regular activities. The unique cultural characteristics of each ethnic community in the locality are an important potential for the commune to develop cultural and experiential tourism .

Ms. Duong Thi Hien, Head of the Luon Coi Club in Na Chao village, shared: "We regularly maintain activities to preserve and teach Luon Coi. This is not only a cultural activity but also a valuable resource for building tourism products associated with local identity."

The cultural life of the Hmong people in Cao Minh still retains its traditional features such as clothing, festivals, cuisine , and musical instruments. In spring, when the apricot and plum blossoms bloom white across the mountain slopes, people of various ethnic groups and tourists flock to the summit of Ngam Xang mountain in Lung Phac village to immerse themselves in the Mu La festival - a traditional festival deeply rooted in the identity of the Hmong people, held annually from the 13th to the 15th of January.

Besides enjoying the cuisine, visitors to the Mu La festival can also immerse themselves in activities rich in cultural identity such as: Hmong flute dance performances, love songs, bullfighting competitions, and experiencing fascinating folk games.

Here, visitors can also organize camping trips, explore the mountainous scenery, and have outdoor cooking and socializing on the summit of Mu La mountain, which is thousands of meters above sea level.

Potential needs to be exploited in the right direction.

Cao Minh commune has a system of hills, mountains, rivers, and streams, and a clean climate, untouched by urbanization. Thanks to its location bordering Cao Bang and Tuyen Quang provinces, the commune has favorable conditions for connecting tours with neighboring localities.

Besides its highlight of majestic mountain ranges shrouded in clouds year-round, Cao Minh commune also boasts terraced rice fields distributed across many villages such as Lung Phac, Lung Nghe, Ban Nghe, Na Chao, Phja Ma, etc. During the rice harvest season, the golden color of the terraced fields stands out against the green forest, creating a picturesque and poetic natural landscape.

Despite its great potential, tourism in Cao Minh commune has not developed to its full potential due to unfavorable transportation conditions and limited information about cultural experiences and scenic spots in the highlands, preventing many tourists from accessing them.

Mr. Nguyen Binh Minh, a tourist from Tuyen Quang province, said: "This is my first time visiting the mountaintop where the Mu La festival is held. I find the space here clean, cool, and the scenery is new and different from other places I've been to."

Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Cao Minh commune, said: Currently, the commune still faces many difficulties such as dilapidated transportation infrastructure, a lack of tourism services and a spontaneous approach; and a lack of properly trained human resources. The high poverty rate also hinders investment in tourism. The locality will always focus on preserving cultural identity to safeguard the potential for cultural tourism experiences of ethnic groups.
