Subianto used the period between his election and official inauguration to build a stable majority in parliament and a network of personal relationships with leaders of partner countries both within and outside Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific region.
New Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto
It is clear that Mr. Subianto currently has a very favorable starting point for his next five-year presidential term, possessing all the necessary elements: opportune timing, advantageous location, and popular support. He was elected President of Indonesia with over 60% of the vote, has extensive political experience in both domestic and foreign affairs, and has secured the backing of Mr. Widodo's faction by forming a governing coalition with Mr. Widodo's eldest son, thus continuing Mr. Widodo's governing achievements.
Although Widodo is no longer in power, his influence continues to cast a shadow over his successor, and his achievements as president will undoubtedly remain one of the top criteria for evaluating the performance of his successor.
Therefore, in Indonesia, there is a change of leadership but continuity, meaning that essentially most of Widodo's governing policies and strategies will be continued by Subianto, at least initially. Subianto intentionally chose this approach, as it is the safest and least risky option domestically. Establishing his own governing legacy is a matter for later.
