Speaking to the press ahead of the momentous event in the archipelago nation, Ahmad Muzani, Secretary-General of the ruling Gerindra Party, said that the inauguration of President Prabowo Subianto will be attended by 21 heads of state and leaders from various countries. To ensure security for the ceremony, Indonesia will deploy a large force, including the army, air force, and navy, along with 7,000 police officers.
Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto (72 years old) won a resounding victory in the February election. He and Vice Presidential candidate Gibran Rakabuming Raka (36 years old), son of incumbent President Widodo, secured 58.6% of the vote, far ahead of former Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan and second-place candidate Muhaimin Iskandar, who received 24.94%.
Since his victory, Mr. Prabowo has traveled extensively, including Jakarta's top destinations such as China, Russia, France, and most ASEAN countries. His pre-in office trips were seen by many analysts as an effort to build global recognition, reflecting Indonesia's ambitious foreign policy aspirations upon assuming power.
Mr. Prabowo was born into a family where his father served as a minister under President Sukarno. However, he was forced into exile at a young age when his father, one of Indonesia's most prominent economists , fled the country for expressing his opposition to President Sukarno. In 1967, when General Suharto came to power, his family returned to the country.
In 1970, Prabowo enlisted in the military and served in the Special Forces before marrying President Suharto's daughter in 1983. After the fall of Suharto's regime in 1998, he once again left Indonesia, living in exile in Jordan. In 2008, he returned to Indonesia, formed his own political party, and ran for president in 2014 and 2019, but lost both times to President Widodo. Prabowo was a long-time rival of President Widodo, but now enjoys strong support from his predecessor.
Against the backdrop of numerous challenges facing Indonesia, including the strategic competition between the US and China, observers are waiting to see how Prabowo will address these difficult issues. During his visit to Beijing, the Indonesian president-elect stated that Indonesia is committed to a non-aligned policy and will maintain good relations with both China and the US.
Mr. Prabowo is also working to bring together the political parties in Indonesia towards a common goal of national prosperity, for the benefit of the people.
According to Reuters , on October 15, Mr. Prabowo met with candidates for high-level government positions to try to bring the Democratic Struggle Party (PDI-P) – Indonesia's largest political party – into the ruling coalition in Parliament . If President-elect Prabowo reaches an agreement with the PDI-P, there will be no opposition party in Parliament, a situation unprecedented since Indonesia began holding direct presidential elections in 2004. To date, seven of the eight parties in Parliament have joined Mr. Prabowo's coalition.
With a high number of votes in the election, coupled with extensive political experience and a ruling coalition holding a majority, the term of the new President Prabowo promises to bring significant changes to Southeast Asia's most populous nation.
