The Information reported on July 6th that TikTok is developing a new version of its app for users in the US, ahead of plans to sell the app to a group of investors.
This move comes as US President Donald Trump said on July 5 that he would begin negotiations with China on July 8 or 9 regarding a possible deal related to TikTok. Trump said the US was close to reaching an agreement on the sale of the short -video app.
According to the report, TikTok had planned to launch its new app on US app stores on September 5th. Last month, Trump extended the deadline to September 17th for ByteDance, the China-based parent company, to divest its TikTok assets in the US.
The Information also reported that TikTok users will have to download the new app to continue using the service, although the current version will still work until March next year – a deadline that may change.
An agreement was reached earlier this year to spin off TikTok's US operations into a new US-based company, largely owned and operated by US investors.
However, the plan was suspended after Beijing signaled it would not approve it amid Trump's announcement of high tariffs on Chinese goods. President Trump said the US would likely have to wait for China's ratification of the agreement.
