During the week celebrating Apple's 50th anniversary, CEO Tim Cook shared his vision for the future of the iPhone, the company's most important product.
"There's still so much we can do with the iPhone. I think it will continue to be central to people's digital lives," Tim Cook said in an interview at Grand Central Station in New York.
This statement hints at Apple's product strategy for the near future. Apple recently reported iPhone revenue of $85.2 billion in the most recent quarter, a company record. The number of active Apple devices now exceeds 2.5 billion, a figure that demonstrates the enduring appeal of its product lines.
2027 marks a new milestone for the iPhone as it turns 20 years old. Apple launched its first touchscreen phone in 2007, completely redefining the smartphone and transforming the company from a computer manufacturer into one of the world's most valuable corporations. From near bankruptcy in the late 1990s to a market capitalization hovering around $3.5 trillion in early 2026, the iPhone has played a crucial role in this success.
However, Tim Cook's comments come at a time when Apple is heavily investing in new devices. Augmented reality glasses and screenless AI wearables are under development.
In an interview with Good Morning America, Apple's CEO listed Apple's major milestones over the past 50 years. When asked about AI, he mentioned the commitment to invest $600 billion in the US over the next four years, including the fact that all the front and back glass for iPhones will come from Kentucky by the end of this year.
Questions about when Tim Cook will retire are also a topic of interest. The 65-year-old CEO has dismissed rumors and stated that his life still revolves around Apple. However, according to Apple Insider , the board of directors has begun planning for succession. John Ternus, head of hardware engineering, is most frequently mentioned as a potential next CEO.
"At Apple, we focus on building tomorrow rather than dwelling on yesterday," Cook wrote in an open letter to global users on the occasion of the anniversary.
Apple will officially turn 50 years old on April 1, 2026. Celebratory events are taking place in many major cities around the world.
