Sony has just announced plans to cease production of physical discs for the PlayStation gaming console starting in January 2028. This means the company will shift entirely to a digital format, requiring users to download games from the PlayStation Store (PS Store).
"This is a necessary step for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to user trends, as preferences for digital media far outweigh those for physical discs..."
"This transition will allow us to operate in a way that aligns with how the majority of the gaming community accesses and plays games today," Sony shared in an announcement posted on July 1st.
The company stated that the transition will not affect games scheduled for release before 2028, which will still be sold as physical discs.
With this move, Sony became the first major game console manufacturer to announce the abandonment of physical discs. Currently, both Sony's PS5 and Microsoft's Xbox offer disc-less options at a lower price. However, the main versions still support installing games and watching movies on Blu-ray discs.
According to Sony, consumer preferences and the entertainment industry in general "continue to shift from physical discs to digital." However, the announcement still received a negative reaction from the gaming community.
According to Bloomberg , some people spend decades collecting physical game discs across various platforms. However, with future games, they will no longer have the option of buying physical discs, at least not on the PlayStation platform.
Sony's move comes just days after Rockstar Games announced that the physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI would only include a game code in the box and no disc. This sparked a strong backlash from users.
While digital game distribution offers several advantages, The Verge argues that it diminishes resale value and makes game sharing difficult. Users are dependent on the internet and the manufacturer's servers to download games.
Also on July 1st, Sony announced that it would cease support for the PS Store on PlayStation 3 (PS3) and PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) handheld gaming consoles.
"The PS3 and PS Vita represent a pivotal era in PlayStation history. Therefore, this decision was not easy," the company stated.

Sony's reasoning is that the PS3 and PS Vita are no longer capable of meeting modern e-commerce systems and payment processing standards. The PS Store first launched with the PS3 in 2006, while the PS Vita launched in 2011.
The PS Store on PS3 will cease operations regionally, starting in August of this year and completing the process by July 2027. Meanwhile, the store on PS Vita will shut down globally starting in July 2027.
After that date, PS3 and PS Vita users will no longer be able to purchase games on the PS Store, but will still be able to download purchased content "in the near future".
"We know this information may disappoint PS3 and PS Vita users, who have a special affection for this generation," Sony emphasized.
The discontinuation of PS Store support on older systems has raised concerns among collectors of physical games. They argue that downloading and saving games digitally is entirely dependent on how long the manufacturer chooses to support them.
