Werner's career has declined sharply in recent years. |
Marcel Schafer, Leipzig's Sporting Director, said of Werner's situation: "We need a breath of fresh air, a new spirit, to regain the vitality and energy that defines this club for next season."
Goal reports that Leipzig's management no longer values Werner highly and has allowed him to leave this summer. Currently, the German striker remains on loan at Tottenham from Leipzig until the end of the season. After 27 appearances, Werner has only scored one goal for Spurs, in the Carabao Cup match against Manchester City.
Tottenham have a buyout clause for Werner worth around £10 million, but Schafer believes the chances of the player remaining in London are very low.
"We spoke to his agent about two or three weeks ago. I think this loan deal didn't go as we had hoped," said the Leipzig director.
The recent sacking of coach Marco Rose by Leipzig has left Werner's future uncertain. German media reports that the striker has attracted interest from clubs outside Europe, including NY Red Bulls in the MLS, who are keen to sign Werner.
Werner continued his unsuccessful career in England. The striker failed at Chelsea, scoring only 10 goals in 56 matches. His form didn't improve at Tottenham either. In nearly two seasons on loan at the London club, Werner only scored a meager 3 goals.
