According to the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), the 200 dong banknote is still valid for circulation.
The 200 dong banknote was issued by the State Bank of Vietnam in 1987, a period when the country was entering a phase of economic reform and development. The front of the banknote features an image of President Ho Chi Minh. The back of the banknote symbolizes agriculture – the foundation of the country's economy.
In its early years, the 200 dong note had a relatively high value and was widely used in people's daily transactions. Over time, due to economic fluctuations and inflation, the real value of the 200 dong note gradually decreased. Today, 200 dong cannot buy as many things as before and has gradually become less used.

According to the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), not only the 200 dong note, but also other small-denomination banknotes such as 100 dong and 500 dong; and metal coins of 200 dong, 500 dong, 1,000 dong, 2,000 dong, and 5,000 dong are still valid for circulation. However, with the development of cashless payments and the impact of factors such as income and exchange rates, as well as the influence of people's consumption habits and use of cash, small-denomination banknotes are increasingly used less and their proportion in circulation is gradually shrinking.
Currently, metal coins and banknotes of 100 and 200 dong denominations are almost no longer seen in daily payment transactions. While the 500 dong denomination is still used in some localities, the volume is not significant (such as for paying at supermarkets, hospitals, or ferry tolls...).
" In recent years, low-denomination banknotes (100 dong, 200 dong, 500 dong) have no practical use for payment purposes. Therefore, the State Bank of Vietnam has stopped printing and minting additional banknotes annually, only continuing to use the necessary quantity from bank reserves, inventory, and the public."
"For other denominations of banknotes printed, issued, and supplied by the State Bank of Vietnam, the full value and denomination structure are ensured to meet the payment needs of the economy," the State Bank of Vietnam emphasized.
Thus, although no longer common in daily transactions, the 200 dong banknote is still in circulation, even though it is no longer being replenished.
Furthermore, for many people, the 200 dong note is also a memento, so they still search for and collect them every year, even though the exchange cost is not cheap.
