RT reported that Yury Ushakov, President Putin's foreign policy advisor, said that President Putin had a phone call with President Trump on December 28 to discuss several issues related to the Ukraine peace talks.

According to Ushakov, the 1 hour and 15 minute phone call was "friendly, cordial and professional," in which the two leaders expressed their shared interest in achieving some lasting peaceful solutions to the conflict in Ukraine.

Putin emphasized the need to build upon the understandings reached between the two leaders at the Russia-US summit in Anchorage, Alaska, in August 2025.

"Both the Russian and American leaders agreed that a temporary ceasefire proposed by Ukraine and European countries would only prolong the conflict and increase the risk of renewed hostilities," Ushakov said.

According to the Russian official, President Putin agreed with Trump's proposal to continue the conflict resolution process by establishing two "working groups" to address security and economic issues.

Earlier on December 28, President Trump wrote in a Truth Social post that he had a "very productive" conversation with President Putin.

The two presidents also agreed to continue negotiations following the meeting between the US leader and Ukrainian President Zelensky in Florida on December 28.

On December 26, Zelensky told Axios that he hoped to reach an agreement on a peace framework in the negotiations. This plan would reportedly require Russia to agree to a ceasefire before any lasting solution could be reached. However, Moscow has long rejected the idea of a temporary ceasefire, arguing that it would allow the Ukrainian army to rearm and regroup.

Last week, President Zelensky unveiled a new 20-point peace plan that he claimed had been discussed with US officials. Moscow rejected the proposal, saying it was entirely different from the plan that Russia and the US had discussed.
