Stemming from the idea of wanting all people, especially poor workers, fishermen, and the elderly to receive the best health care right at the facility, the City Acupuncture Association coordinated with the Son Tra Regional Medical Center to establish a free acupuncture unit at the Son Tra Ward Medical Station.
According to Dr. Ngo Van Dinh Hoai, Director of Son Tra Regional Medical Center, the acupuncture unit came into operation to meet the needs of medical examination and treatment, combining traditional medicine and modern medicine, contributing to improving community health and reducing the burden on upper-level facilities.
Every afternoon, people, especially the elderly, suffering from chronic diseases, musculoskeletal diseases, spine diseases, herniated discs, insomnia, etc., come to the Acupuncture Unit of Son Tra Ward Health Station to receive free examination, consultation, treatment, acupuncture, massage, acupressure, and cupping by doctors and experts in the field of traditional medicine. This place, like a “rescue station”, helps many hearts to be warmed and loved.

Ms. PTG (73 years old, residing in Son Tra ward) has suffered from bone and joint diseases for many years, but due to difficulties in traveling, she rarely has the opportunity to go to hospitals for examination and treatment. Therefore, when she heard that doctors and experts in the field of traditional medicine were providing free treatment at a medical station near her house, she rushed to get advice and acupuncture...
“After a period of treatment, my illness has improved by 70-80%. The doctors have voluntarily contributed their salaries and spent their free time to examine, consult and treat people for free. We are very touched by the spirit of volunteerism, dedicated care and high skills of the experts and doctors. I hope the acupuncture unit will be maintained for a long time so that all people, especially the poor, fishermen and the elderly, have the opportunity to receive on-site treatment,” said Ms. G.
The acupuncture unit of Son Tra Ward Health Station operates from 2-6 pm Monday to Friday every week with a scale of 5 acupuncture beds, 5 electroacupuncture machines and 5 doctors and experts in the field of traditional medicine.

“After more than 1 year of implementation, the Acupuncture Unit of Son Tra Ward Health Station has regularly treated more than 500 patients, with thousands of visits for examination, acupuncture, disease prevention consultation and drug-free treatment,” informed Dr. Hoai.
According to the City Acupuncture Association, currently, the number of people suffering from musculoskeletal diseases and movement-related diseases is increasing, especially among the elderly, but many of them do not have the conditions to get timely medical examination and treatment.
In the situation where hospitals are always overloaded and people's health care needs are increasing, there is a need for models for people's health such as the Acupuncture Unit of Son Tra Ward Health Station.
