Originating from the idea of wanting all citizens, especially poor laborers, fishermen, and the elderly, to receive the best possible healthcare right at the local level, the City Acupuncture Association, in coordination with the Son Tra Regional Health Center, established a free acupuncture unit at the Son Tra Ward Health Station.
According to Dr. Ngo Van Dinh Hoai, Director of the Son Tra Regional Medical Center, the acupuncture unit was put into operation to meet the needs of medical examination and treatment, combining traditional and modern medicine, contributing to improving community health and reducing the burden on higher-level medical facilities.
Every afternoon, residents, especially the elderly suffering from chronic illnesses, musculoskeletal disorders, spinal problems, herniated discs, insomnia, etc., gather at the Acupuncture Unit of the Son Tra Ward Health Station to receive free examinations, consultations, treatments, acupuncture, massage, acupressure, and cupping therapy from doctors and experts in traditional medicine. This place acts as a "rescue station," warming and comforting countless hearts.

Ms. PTG (73 years old, residing in Son Tra ward) has suffered from bone and joint diseases for many years, but due to mobility difficulties, she rarely has the opportunity to visit hospitals for examination and treatment. Therefore, when she heard that doctors and experts in traditional medicine were offering free treatment at the local health station, she rushed there for consultation and acupuncture.
“After a period of treatment, my condition has improved by 70-80%. The doctors voluntarily contributed their salaries and dedicated their free time to examine, advise, and treat people free of charge. We are deeply moved by the volunteer spirit, dedicated care, and high-level skills of the experts and doctors. We hope that the acupuncture unit will be maintained for a long time so that all people, especially the poor, fishermen, and the elderly, have the opportunity to receive treatment locally,” said Mrs. G.
The acupuncture unit at Son Tra Ward Health Station operates from 2 PM to 6 PM, Monday to Friday, with 5 acupuncture beds, 5 electroacupuncture machines, and 5 doctors and experts in traditional medicine.

"Over a year after its implementation, the Acupuncture Unit at Son Tra Ward Health Station has regularly treated more than 500 patients, with thousands of consultations, acupuncture treatments, disease prevention advice, and non-drug treatments," Dr. Hoai informed.
According to the City Acupuncture Association, the number of people suffering from musculoskeletal disorders and movement-related diseases is increasing, especially among the elderly, but many of them do not have the means to receive timely medical examination and treatment.
Given the constant overcrowding in hospitals and the increasing demand for healthcare, there is a need for models that prioritize public health, such as the Acupuncture Unit at Son Tra Ward Health Station.
