Awakening tourism potential
Happy to share with us, Vice Chairman of Tram Tau District People's Committee Khang A Chua said that in 2023, Tram Tau district successfully organized the "Steps on the Clouds" Mountain Climbing Competition - conquering Ta Chi Nhu peak, attracting hundreds of journalists and reporters from all over the country to participate. The spread of information to readers near and far is very large, accordingly, the number of tourists coming to Tram Tau is increasing day by day. And this year, "Steps on the Clouds" II - conquering Ta Xua peak. On the journey to conquer Ta Xua peak, athletes experienced the feeling of sublimation when conquering the steep paths, crossing the ancient rhododendron forest covered with moss.
One of the highlights of the journey is the “Dragon’s Back” - a narrow and long mountain range, hidden in the sea of clouds like a giant dragon’s back, an extremely impressive scene with white clouds floating, covering the valleys below, creating a magical and majestic natural picture. “The mountain climbing competition has contributed to significant changes in people’s lives and tourism.
Through the organization of the season, workers have jobs, tourism-related services develop, local agricultural products are strongly promoted and consumed a lot. People who work as motorbike taxi drivers and support tourism have very high incomes. The mountain climbing tournament helps Tram Tau get its name on the tourism map, contributing to this spectacular change", the Chairman of Tram Tau District People's Committee expressed.
Tram Tau has 3 mountains in the top 15 highest mountains in Vietnam, including: Ta Chi Nhu at 2,979m above sea level, the seventh highest in Vietnam; Ta Xua - Ban Cong (renamed Phu Sa Phin from April 2025) at 2,865m and Sa Mu peak in Ban Mu at 2,756m above sea level. Currently, the district is exploiting the advantages of 2 mountains nearly 3,000m above sea level, Ta Xua and Ta Chi Nhu, to develop adventure and experiential tourism. On these routes, visitors can experience mountain climbing, cloud hunting, watching the ancient rhododendron forest on the top of Ta Xua in April and May or watching dragon honey flowers in October every year. Or like the route to conquer Ta Chi Nhu, which constantly changes according to altitude, sometimes going through primeval forests, sometimes going through streams, going through low-canopy forests, grasslands, bamboo forests... to the "grassland like steppe near the top of the mountain".
In addition, at Lau Camping Tourist Area in Phinh Ho Commune, in addition to watching the sunrise in the sea of clouds, enjoying the fresh air and quiet space, visitors can also experience paragliding, freely in the sea of clouds, and admire Muong Lo fields from above. At the same time, Tram Tau also builds unique products such as: Hot mineral spring resort tourism; Eo Gio pine hill area, Cu Vai cluster, Hang Xe village; Hang De Cho waterfall, Lang Nhi commune, community tourism in Hat Luu commune, etc.
In fact, coming to Tram Tau today, every tourist will see a mountainous district that is gradually developing, with more services and more professional tourism workers. However, the most important thing is that the tourist attractions all retain their natural, pristine beauty and friendly people, and the people in the villages have better income from tourism.
Ms. Sung Thi So, Tram Tau Tourism Service Cooperative, said that her family has only been involved in tourism services for a few months but the economic efficiency is better. With each trip with guests up the mountain, the motorbike taxis that pick up and drop off at each stage on the mountain climbing route also bring significant income to her family. On days off, her two children also carry water to the points at the top of the dragon's back on the Ta Xua mountain climbing route to sell water. "I am learning Mandarin so that I can work as a motorbike taxi, guide, and carry things for guests when climbing the mountain more. When I travel more, I will have a job and income," Ms. So said.
Along with Ms. So, Mr. Giang A Chua and Phang A Su in Ta Xua village, Ban Cong commune have also participated in the cooperative since its early days, currently working as portels (guides for mountain climbers) and motorbike taxi drivers. “Each mountain peak and route in Tram Tau district is closely associated with the local people, everyone here is familiar with it, so when the locality developed adventure and discovery tourism, the people in the commune actively participated and became guides. We have brought many domestic and foreign tourists to climb mountains and experience them, and they have had very good impressions, many of them have returned,” said Mr. Giang A Chua.
In particular, according to poster Phang A Su, since working in tourism, my family has not had to worry about going hungry. I have learned a lot about using technology, phones and cameras to support tourists when they go on their experiences. When there are tourists leading the group to climb the mountain, each day I earn an average of 500,000 - 600,000 VND. During peak months, when the number of tourists is high, my income also increases significantly. My family is very excited, escaping poverty thanks to working in tourism," said Mr. Phang A Su.
Mr. Nguyen Viet Hung, Director of Hung Viet Trading and Tourism Company Limited, said that to support people in developing tourism, he established Tram Tau Tourism Service Cooperative to coordinate with people in Tram Tau district to exploit the tourism potential in the district. According to Mr. Hung, the Cooperative has 7 founding members, and the members are people in Ta Xua Village, Khau Ly Village, Ban Cong Commune. Joining the Cooperative, members are trained and coached in tourist service skills. The Cooperative provides uniforms and helmets so that people can work professionally and distinguish themselves from those outside the Cooperative. People actively participate in working as porters and motorbike taxi drivers. In addition, people in Khau Ly Village have coordinated to get To Day Flower seedlings provided by the Cooperative to plant on the road to Na Trang Waterfall, Khau Ly Village, Ban Cong Commune to make a To Day Flower road for long-term tourism exploitation.
In 2023, Tram Tau welcomed and served 150,000 visitors, equal to 136% of the district's plan. Of which, there were 20,150 international visitors; revenue reached 112 billion VND, equal to 131% of the district's plan. In 2024, the district welcomed 152,500 visitors, exceeding 102% of the plan. Of which, international visitors reached 37,440, 7% higher than the target. Tourism revenue reached 120 billion VND, completing 100% of the plan. In 2025, strive to welcome 160,000 tourists, including 35,000 international visitors; tourism revenue is estimated at 128 billion VND. These numbers not only show the strong development of the tourism industry but also affirm the attractiveness of Tram Tau in the eyes of tourists.
Ensure security and order
Porter Giang A Lau in Ban Cong said that in addition to farming and forestry, during the tourist season, people in the commune also provide mountain climbing services for tourists. People work as motorbike taxi drivers and porters to take tourists to conquer destinations in the area. They are very hospitable, have communication skills, and professionally guide tourists. Since tourism has been introduced, people's lives have become less difficult and have changed over time. On average, if there are tourists, they can earn 2 million VND per week. We really hope that more tourists will come to Tram Tau, to the peaks of Ta Xua, Ta Chi Nhu, Cu Vai... so that people have jobs, increase their income, and also spread the beautiful image of the majestic nature of the Northwest highlands to more people.
To achieve such impressive results, Vice Chairman of Tram Tau District People's Committee Khang A Chua said that the Commune Police force plays an important role. In the district, communes with tourist attractions always train and widely disseminate security and order, temporary residence, fire prevention and fighting, etc. to households, thereby helping people understand and comply. From community tourism and tourism services, people have responded and implemented, thereby creating jobs, increasing income, and escaping poverty for many households here.
For example, in Ban Cong commune, there are 5 villages; the commune population is about 3,425 people, of which Mong ethnic group is over 95%. The commune police have always accompanied the people, guided them to comply with the law, ensured security and order in the area, actively and effectively implemented the movement of the whole people to protect national security; took advantage of the role of prestigious people in ethnic minorities to serve the work of ensuring security and order in the locality and doing community tourism, what skills are needed for people to grasp and implement?
In particular, the area has a route leading to the top of Ta Xua mountain with famous landmarks that attract tourists to experience tourism. “The commune police have actively advised the Party Committee and authorities, coordinated with sectors such as Forest Rangers, the Forest Protection Management Board to carry out forest management and protection, forest fire prevention and fighting. Guiding people to carry out the work of fighting against crime, peaceful villages, people can feel secure in working, producing, and developing the economy; Promoting the role of prestigious people in propaganda, mobilizing the development of local economic products such as growing taro, not illegally leaving the country; preserving the cultural identity of the Mong ethnic group. In particular, promoting the role of the local security force, guiding porters, showing the way for tourists to ensure safety during the process of tourists experiencing mountain climbing...”, Captain Lo Duc Van, Deputy Head of Ban Cong Commune Police said.
Along with that, Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Van Chuong, Deputy Chief of Tram Tau Town Police, said that as tourism develops, the number of visitors to Tram Tau increases day by day, and accordingly, the town has a model of developing community tourism, connecting households doing tourism while also closely cooperating with the police force in ensuring security and order in the area. At the same time, tourist establishments have also created stable jobs for many people in the district.
The economic efficiency from tourism has contributed to changing the lives of people in Tram Tau. Although many villages are still facing difficulties and cannot be completely changed, the development of tourism shows a hopeful future when the spread of beautiful images of people, majestic nature and increasingly better tourism services and products attracts tourists to come, go and return.
Mr. Vu Manh Cuong, Director of Cuong Hai Tourism Cooperative, said that people are very excited to have better income from tourism, right at the family's facility, creating jobs for more than 30 local workers. Currently, there are 43 accommodation establishments in the area, including 1 3-star hotel, 5 motels and 37 homestays, 14 cooperatives and 4 businesses investing and building tourism services.
In recent years, in order to develop green tourism, associated with environmental protection, conservation, promotion of cultural values, and protection of natural landscapes, Tram Tau district has strengthened the propaganda, promotion, and tourism promotion. At the same time, building new community tourism products, diversifying and improving the quality of community tourism products associated with indigenous cultural experiences, building standard models; taking advantage of natural resources to build new products for cave exploration, mountain climbing, organizing marathons, camping, trekking, etc.
