Tram Tau tourism is gradually establishing itself on the tourism map with its own unique features: such as trekking, mountain climbing, and cloud hunting in Ta Chi Nhu and Ta Xua...

Unlocking tourism potential

Sharing his joy with us, the Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Tram Tau District, Khang A Chua, said that in 2023, Tram Tau District successfully organized the "Footsteps on the Clouds" mountain climbing competition – conquering Ta Chi Nhu peak, attracting hundreds of journalists and reporters from across the country. The information spread widely to readers near and far, leading to a significant increase in tourists visiting Tram Tau. And this year, the second "Footsteps on the Clouds" competition will conquer Ta Xua peak. On the journey to conquer Ta Xua peak, athletes experienced an exhilarating feeling as they conquered treacherous trails, crossing ancient rhododendron forests covered in moss.

One of the highlights of the journey is the "Dragon's Backbone" - a narrow and long mountain range, hidden amidst a sea of clouds like a giant dragon's back, an incredibly impressive scene with fluffy white clouds covering the valleys below, creating a magical and majestic natural landscape. "The mountain climbing competition has significantly contributed to changing the lives and tourism of the local people."

"Through organizing the season, workers have found employment, tourism-related services have developed, local agricultural products have been strongly promoted and sold in large quantities. People working as motorbike taxi drivers and supporting tourism have earned very high incomes. The mountain climbing competition has helped put Tram Tau on the tourism map, contributing to this spectacular transformation," the Chairman of the People's Committee of Tram Tau district expressed.

Tram Tau district boasts three mountains among the top 15 highest in Vietnam: Ta Chi Nhu, at 2,979m above sea level, ranking seventh in height in Vietnam; Ta Xua - Ban Cong (renamed Phu Sa Phin from April 2025), at 2,865m; and Sa Mu peak in Ban Mu, at 2,756m above sea level. Currently, the district is exploiting the advantages of two mountains, Ta Xua and Ta Chi Nhu, which are nearly 3,000m above sea level, to develop adventure and experiential tourism. Along these routes, visitors can experience mountain climbing, cloud hunting, and admire the ancient rhododendron forests on Ta Xua peak in April and May, or see the honeysuckle flowers in October each year. Or, for example, the route to conquer Ta Chi Nhu changes constantly with altitude, sometimes through primeval forests, sometimes across streams, through low-lying forests, grasslands, bamboo groves... until it reaches a "grassland-like meadow near the mountaintop".

Furthermore, at Lau Camping Tourist Area in Phinh Ho commune, in addition to watching the sunrise amidst the sea of clouds, enjoying the fresh air and tranquil atmosphere, visitors can also experience paragliding, soaring through the clouds and admiring the Muong Lo rice fields from above. At the same time, Tram Tau is also developing unique tourism products such as: hot spring resort tourism; the pine hill area of Eo Gio, Cu Vai hamlet, Hang Xe village; Hang De Cho waterfall, Lang Nhi commune; community tourism in Hat Luu commune…

In fact, visiting Tram Tau today, every tourist will see a mountainous district that is gradually developing, with more services and more professional tourism workers. However, the most important thing is that the tourist destinations have preserved their natural, pristine beauty, the people are friendly, and the villagers have earned better incomes from tourism.

Ms. Sung Thi So, from the Tram Tau Tourism Service Cooperative, said that her family has only been involved in tourism services for a few months, but the economic results are quite good. Each trip with tourists up the mountain, including motorbike taxi rides along the climbing route, brings in a significant income for her family. On days off, her two children also carry water up to the top of the mountain ridge on the Ta Xua peak to sell it. “I’m learning Vietnamese so I can work as a motorbike taxi driver, guide, and carry luggage for tourists on mountain climbing trips more often. When I can do more trips, I’ll have more work and income,” Ms. So said.

The commune police regularly organize activities to disseminate legal information to residents in the area.

Along with Ms. So, Mr. Giang A Chua and Mr. Phang A Su from Ta Xua village, Ban Cong commune, are also members of the cooperative from its early days and are currently working as porters (guides for mountain climbers) and motorbike taxi drivers. “Every mountain peak and trail in Tram Tau district is deeply connected to the local people; everyone here knows it well. So when the locality developed adventure and exploration tourism, the people in the commune actively participated and became guides. We have brought many domestic and foreign tourists to go mountain climbing and experience the area, and they have had a very good impression; many even return,” said Mr. Giang A Chua.

According to Phàng A Sử, in particular, since starting his family tourism business, he no longer worries about going hungry. He has learned a lot about using technology, phones, and cameras to assist tourists during their experiences. When he leads mountain climbing tours, he earns an average of 500,000 - 600,000 VND per day. During peak months, the number of tourists is high, and his income increases significantly. "My family is very happy and has escaped poverty thanks to tourism," said Phàng A Sử.

Mr. Nguyen Viet Hung, Director of Hung Viet Trading and Tourism Company Limited, said that to support local people in developing tourism, he established the Tram Tau Tourism Service Cooperative to cooperate with people in Tram Tau district to exploit the district's tourism potential. According to Mr. Hung, the cooperative has 7 founding members, and the members are people from Ta Xua and Khau Ly villages in Ban Cong commune. Joining the cooperative, members receive training in skills to serve tourists. The cooperative provides uniforms such as shirts and helmets to make the members look more professional and distinguish them from those outside the cooperative. Locals actively participate as porters and motorbike taxi drivers. In addition, people in Khau Ly village have collaborated to obtain saplings of the "Hoa To Day" flower provided by the cooperative to plant along the road to Na Trang Waterfall in Khau Ly village, Ban Cong commune, creating a "Hoa To Day" flower road for long-term tourism development.

In 2023, Tram Tau welcomed and served 150,000 visitors, exceeding the district's target by 136%. This included 20,150 international visitors; revenue reached 112 billion VND, 131% of the district's target. In 2024, the district welcomed 152,500 visitors, surpassing the target by 102%. Of these, 37,440 were international visitors, 7% higher than the target. Tourism revenue reached 120 billion VND, achieving 100% of the plan. In 2025, the goal is to welcome 160,000 tourists, including 35,000 international visitors; tourism revenue is estimated at 128 billion VND. These figures not only demonstrate the strong development of the tourism industry but also affirm Tram Tau's attractiveness to tourists.

Ensuring security and order

According to Porter Giàng A Lầu from Bản Công village, besides farming and forestry, during the tourist season, people in the commune also provide mountain climbing services for tourists. Motorbike taxi drivers and porters take visitors to various destinations in the area. They are very hospitable, have excellent communication skills, and provide professional guidance. Since the arrival of tourism, the lives of the people have become less difficult and have improved over time. On average, if they guide tourists, they can earn 2 million VND per week. We hope that more tourists will come to Trạm Tấu, to the peaks of Tà Xùa, Tà Chì Nhù, Cu Vai… so that the people have jobs, increase their income, and also spread the beautiful image of the majestic nature of the Northwest highlands to more people.

The police in Ban Cong commune are guiding residents on fire prevention and firefighting.

To achieve such impressive results, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Tram Tau District, Khang A Chua, stated that the commune police force plays a crucial role. In the district, especially in communes with tourist attractions, the police force provides thorough training and disseminates information to households regarding security, order, temporary residence registration, fire prevention, and firefighting. As a result, everyone understands and complies with regulations. Community tourism and related tourism services have been embraced by the people, creating jobs, increasing income, and helping many households escape poverty.

For example, in Ban Cong commune, which has 5 villages and a population of approximately 3,425 people, over 95% are Mong ethnic people. The commune police have always been alongside the people, guiding them to comply with the law, ensuring security and order in the area, actively and effectively implementing the movement of all citizens protecting national security; leveraging the role of influential figures among ethnic minorities to serve the work of ensuring local security and order and developing community tourism, what skills are needed for the people to grasp and implement?

The area, in particular, has a route leading to the summit of Ta Xua mountain with famous landmarks that attract tourists seeking experiential travel. “The commune police have actively advised the Party committee and local government, coordinating with departments such as the Forest Protection Department and the Protective Forest Management Board to manage and protect the forest, prevent and fight forest fires. They guide the people in combating crime, ensuring peace and security in the villages so that people can work, produce, and develop the economy with peace of mind; they promote the role of influential people in disseminating information and mobilizing the development of local economic products such as taro cultivation, preventing illegal emigration, and preserving the cultural identity of the Mong ethnic group. Especially, they promote the role of local security forces, guiding porters and tourists to ensure safety during their mountain climbing experiences…”, said Captain Lo Duc Van, Deputy Head of Ban Cong Commune Police.

In addition, Lieutenant Nguyen Van Chuong, Deputy Head of the Tram Tau Town Police, said that with the development of tourism, the number of visitors to Tram Tau is increasing. Accordingly, the town has a model of community-based tourism development, linking households involved in tourism while also cooperating closely with the police force in ensuring security and order in the area. At the same time, these tourism establishments have also created stable jobs for many people in the district.

The economic benefits from tourism have contributed to changing the lives of people in Tram Tau, although many villages are still struggling and have not yet been completely transformed. However, the daily development of tourism shows a hopeful future as the spread of beautiful images of the people, majestic nature, and increasingly better tourism services and products attracts tourists to visit, leave, and return.

Mr. Vu Manh Cuong, Director of Cuong Hai Tourism Cooperative, said that the local people are very happy to have better income from tourism, and that their family's business has created jobs for more than 30 local workers. Currently, there are 43 accommodation establishments in the area, including 1 3-star hotel, 5 guesthouses and 37 homestays, with 14 cooperatives and 4 businesses investing in and developing tourism services.

Over the years, to develop tourism in a green direction, linked to environmental protection, preservation and promotion of cultural values, and protection of natural landscapes, Tram Tau district has strengthened its propaganda, promotion, and tourism development efforts. At the same time, it has developed new community tourism products, diversified and improved the quality of community tourism products associated with local cultural experiences, built model projects that meet standards; and utilized its natural resources to develop new products such as cave exploration, mountain climbing, organizing marathons, camping, and trekking…
