What foods can a 6-month-old baby eat?

Nutrition during the first six months of life directly impacts a child's development. Breast milk remains the optimal source of nutrition, fully meeting the child's needs during this period.

The first six months of life are considered the "golden period" for infant development. During this time, the baby's body develops very rapidly, while the immune system and organs are still maturing. Therefore, choosing the right nutrition plays a particularly important role.

Breast milk is the perfect source of nutrition during the first 6 months.

According to the India Times, Dr. Srikanth Kulkarni, consultant neonatologist and pediatrician at Rainbow Children's Hospital ( India ), said that breast milk is the ideal food for children under 6 months old. Breast milk contains sufficient energy, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and many bioactive substances that help children grow healthily.

Besides providing nutrients, breast milk also contains natural antibodies that help protect children against many infectious diseases such as diarrhea, pneumonia, and respiratory infections. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that children should be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life and continue breastfeeding in combination with solid foods until at least 2 years of age.

One thing many parents don't know is that babies who are exclusively breastfed for the first six months don't need extra water, even in hot weather. This is because about 87% of breast milk is water, which is enough to meet the baby's needs. The remaining components in breast milk are lactose (7%), fat (3.8%), and protein (1%).

A unique aspect of breast milk is that its nutritional composition is constantly changing to suit the developmental needs of the child. In the first few days after birth, colostrum contains many antibodies and proteins that help boost immunity. Later, transitional and mature milk provide more energy and fat to meet the baby's growth needs.

Even within a single feeding, the foremilk is usually more watery, helping to quench the baby's thirst, while the hindmilk is richer in fat, supporting weight gain and brain development.

Maternal nutrition affects the quality of breast milk.

To maintain a plentiful and nutritious milk supply, breastfeeding mothers need more calories and protein. Experts recommend that mothers supplement their diet with approximately 350-400 kcal per day and 15-20 g of protein during this period. The diet should be varied, including meat, fish, eggs, dairy, legumes, whole grains, green vegetables, and fruits to ensure adequate vitamin and mineral intake.

In addition, mothers need to drink about 3-4 liters of water per day to support the milk production process. In some cases, doctors may recommend supplementing with iron, folic acid, calcium, or a multivitamin, especially for women who are vegetarian or deficient in micronutrients.

Conversely, mothers should limit caffeinated drinks, carbonated drinks, and sugary drinks, and avoid smoking. They should also limit processed foods, those high in sugar or fat, and avoid eating fish with high mercury levels such as bigeye tuna, bluefin tuna, and swordfish.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mothers should also abstain from alcohol to avoid increasing the risk of sleep disorders and cognitive developmental delays in their children later in life.

Because a mother's diet during breastfeeding affects her child's diet later on, mothers should also limit their intake of foods high in added sugar and processed fats, such as fast food.

In cases where the mother is unable to breastfeed or her milk supply is insufficient to meet the baby's needs, infant formula can be used. However, cow's milk should be avoided during the first year of life due to its high protein and fat content, which can put strain on the developing digestive system and kidneys.

Although breast milk provides almost all the necessary nutrients, exclusively breastfed babies are often advised to supplement with vitamin D as directed by their doctor to support bone development and prevent rickets.
