Prospects from the organic cinnamon farming model

In recent years, Quang Tan commune has gradually developed its cinnamon growing area towards organic farming, mainly in the two villages of Tai Ly Say and Thanh Binh, with the active participation of the local people. This has increased the value of agricultural products, ensured stable output, increased income for the people, and contributed to environmental protection.

For decades, cinnamon trees have provided a source of income for many households in Quang Tan commune. However, traditional production and harvesting methods have limitations, leading to significant waste and reduced value; productivity, quality, and the ecological environment are all affected. But now, cinnamon growers in Quang Tan, concentrated mainly in Tai Ly Say and Thanh Binh villages, have shifted towards organic farming, boldly innovating to increase income and build a more prosperous life. Specifically, farmers proactively avoid or largely eliminate the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and chemical growth stimulants. As a result, the area of organic cinnamon forests in the highland villages of Quang Tan commune is expanding, showing positive changes in the mindset of applying science and technology to production among the local people.

Mr. Chiu Di Senh is one of the first households in Tai Ly Say village to implement the organic cinnamon cultivation model under a project implemented and guided by the Agricultural Extension Center (Department of Agriculture and Environment) and the Department of Science and Technology. The old method involved growers selecting seedlings based on experience and using chemical pesticides based on estimations. With the organic method, the care process uses only fertilizers made from livestock and poultry waste, utilizing agricultural by-products combined with composted microbial enzymes... instead of chemical fertilizers; weeding and pest control are done manually, combined with some biological pesticides at strictly controlled frequencies. This natural vegetation acts as a "protective layer" on the soil, creating moisture, porosity, and fertility. This allows the cinnamon trees to enhance their natural resistance, optimizing yield and quality of agricultural products.

Organic cinnamon provides a decent income for the people of Quang Tan commune.

Mr. Sếnh shared: Organic farming brings many benefits simultaneously, helping to increase income and protect people's health, while also meeting the high demands of the most discerning markets. Applying organic production methods is also a way for each person to contribute to protecting clean water sources for daily life, preventing soil degradation. Especially, cinnamon products are of higher quality, meeting many strict food safety criteria, so after harvesting, they will be purchased by cooperatives at a higher price.

In the villages of Tài Lý Sáy and Thanh Bình, many other families are now adopting this farming method. They share experiences and new techniques with each other; they readily exchange labor, working on one house and then moving on to another to help each other develop. This also helps to strengthen the solidarity among the villagers. Currently, the area of organic cinnamon cultivation is nearly 250 hectares and will increase further as subsequent cinnamon crops are approaching the age to meet the required organic standards. Quang Tan cinnamon products are purchased by Son Ha Spice Company Limited and Quang Ninh Cinnamon Joint Stock Company for processing, preservation, and distribution.

One of the key factors contributing to the promising prospects of the organic cinnamon farming model in Quang Tan is the close guidance and support provided to the people by all levels of government and local authorities. Implementing the "Development of Organic Agriculture in Quang Ninh Province until 2025, with a vision to 2030" project of the Provincial People's Committee (according to Decision No. 685/QD-UBND dated March 18, 2022), Quang Tan is included in the province's 3,000-hectare organic cinnamon development zone. People are also facilitated in accessing preferential policy credit sources and receive hands-on guidance to effectively apply appropriate scientific and technological solutions...

Developing organic agriculture, aiming for green, clean, and sustainable agriculture in Quang Ninh province, is currently an inevitable trend, meeting the increasingly high demands of the agricultural product consumer market. According to a report from the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province currently has 90 hectares of rice-mud-crab farming; 45 hectares of organic rice with a yield of approximately 150 tons; and 329 hectares of organic cinnamon with a yield of 220 tons...
