Tottenham are currently in rock bottom form. |
Tottenham Hotspur will travel to Atletico Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano stadium on the morning of March 11th for the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. This is an opportunity for the English team to regain confidence, as their form in the Premier League is currently in crisis.
In contrast to their domestic performances, Tottenham have been very impressive in European competitions this season. The London club secured five wins in the qualifying rounds, including notable victories against Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt.
Those results helped Tottenham finish the qualifying round in the top four, ahead of many big teams such as Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Chelsea.
However, Spurs' form in the Premier League is quite the opposite. Their 1-3 defeat to Crystal Palace last week extended their winless streak to 11 matches, a dismal record in the club's history.
Igor Tudor's team is currently just one point above the relegation zone. Spurs are also on a run of five consecutive defeats in all competitions, including three under Tudor.
Meanwhile, Atletico advanced to the round of 16 after overcoming Club Brugge in the play-off round. Diego Simeone's team drew 3-3 in the first leg before winning 4-1 at home. Alexander Sorloth shone with a hat-trick in the second leg.
However, Atletico also revealed weaknesses in their defense. They finished the qualifying round conceding 15 goals, the most among the teams that reached the round of 16.
Atletico's recent form remains quite positive. Last weekend, they beat Real Sociedad 3-2 in La Liga. That victory was also the Madrid team's fourth consecutive home win, and they scored at least three goals in all four matches.
Atletico and Tottenham have only met once in history, in the 1963 Cup Winners' Cup final. Tottenham won convincingly 5-1 on that occasion, with Jimmy Greaves scoring a brace.
After more than six decades, the two teams meet again in European competition. However, given their contrasting current form, Tottenham understand that their trip to the Metropolitano will be a huge challenge to their ambitions of progressing deep into this season's Champions League.
