Reality TV and the pressure of the next season.

Recently, the small screen has seen an influx of reality TV shows, from family-oriented shows like "Dad, Where Are We Going?", "Mom's Away, Dad's a Superhero,"... to music programs like "Beautiful Sister Riding the Waves," "Pretty Girl Says Hi," "Brother Overcoming a Thousand Obstacles," "Brother Says Hi,"... or charity shows like "Vietnamese Family Shelter," "God of Fortune Knocks on the Door"...

This diversity offers viewers many choices, but also creates pressure on producers who must not only compete but also surpass the success of the previous season to continue "retaining" viewers.

Undeniably, the success of the first season is considered an advantage, as the show's brand gradually became familiar to viewers. However, this also created considerable pressure, particularly the pressure of comparisons. In the first season, producers often invited stars or popular figures to generate attention. When the show was successful, the dilemma arose: inviting the same old faces might become monotonous, while choosing new talents carried risks.

The return of "Brother Says Hi" for season 2 is being compared in terms of the popularity of the contestants, the investment in music , etc. "Beautiful Sister Riding the Wind, " despite significant format changes to create something new, still faces comparisons. Some programs like Rap Viet, Who Is That Person?, and Mysterious Singer ... were hugely successful in their early seasons but have somewhat lost their appeal in later seasons. Meanwhile, after the success of 2024, the producers of "Brother Says Hi" chose not to produce another season immediately but to focus on "All-Round Newcomer" before returning for a new season in 2026.

The biggest challenge when entering the next season isn't about "reinventing at all costs," but about surpassing the success of the previous season. When a format has made its mark, audience expectations increase significantly, even becoming more demanding. This puts the team under double pressure: they must both maintain the core identity that built the brand and find new, compelling elements to prevent the show from falling into clichés. For producers, the pressure lies not only in creative ideas but also in the ability to control and operate an increasingly large and demanding production system.

According to Mr. Tran Dinh Phuong, Deputy General Director of Bee Media Company, to maintain appeal for the next season, the most important thing is to start by clearly understanding the core values and reasons why the program is loved. "Once that 'value axis' has been identified, all innovations should revolve around deepening it, not completely changing it. Innovation can come from storytelling, character approach, technology application, or expanding the experiential space, but the spirit of the program must be maintained," Mr. Phuong analyzed.

Simultaneously, the production team needs to invest seriously in audience research. Because a program not only competes with other television formats, but also directly with digital content on social media. "I believe that a program's long-term success doesn't lie in each season being different, but in each season improving. When the content is more in-depth, the storytelling is refreshed, and the operating system is robust enough, the program's appeal will be maintained naturally and sustainably," Mr. Tran Dinh Phuong stated.
