According to Nguyen Van Huong, Head of the Weather Forecasting Department, there is very little chance of cold fronts appearing during the Lunar New Year holiday of the Year of the Horse 2026. The weather will generally be sunny and warm in the afternoon in many areas. After the holiday, there is still a possibility of a cold front.
Looking further ahead to the cold weather situation, the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting predicts that in February, cold air activity will be weaker, but will still cause periods of intense cold and frost.
Meteorological and hydrological experts note that severe cold spells cause a sharp drop in minimum temperatures, especially in the northern mountainous regions, and may be accompanied by frost and snow. At the same time, light rain and drizzle in northern provinces and cities will be concentrated in the latter half of February and March (similar to the multi-year average).
Severe cold weather can affect public health; frost and snow reduce immunity, increase the risk of disease outbreaks, and cause damage to livestock and poultry. In agricultural production, severe cold weather and frost can slow down the growth and development of crops.
To proactively respond to severe cold weather, the National Steering Committee for Civil Defense requests that the People's Committees of affected provinces and cities closely monitor warning and forecast bulletins on the development of the cold front and severe cold weather, and promptly inform local authorities and the public to proactively take appropriate preventive measures.
Provinces and cities are reviewing their plans to respond to severe cold weather, with particular emphasis on strengthening guidance on ensuring the health of residents and students in boarding schools; and prohibiting the use of charcoal stoves for heating in enclosed rooms to avoid casualties. Simultaneously, they are disseminating information and guiding livestock farmers to reinforce and shelter their barns; stockpile feed, keep animals warm, and prevent and control diseases in livestock and poultry; and providing guidance on measures to ensure the safety of rice, vegetable, and other crop production.
