Throughout this year, Samsung has hinted that the future of Galaxy AI may include a paid model, and this message was reiterated at the product launch event on September 26th.
At this event, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Tab S10 and Galaxy S24 FE product lines, while reaffirming the idea of rolling out paid Galaxy AI features. The company's press release stated: "Fees may apply to some AI features by the end of 2025." This isn't a new message, but it's significant as it's been reiterated after previous product launches earlier in the year.
Is Galaxy AI about to become a paid service?
The future of Galaxy AI: Still uncertain.
Despite announcements about charging for Galaxy AI, Samsung has yet to specify which features will be included in the fee. Earlier this year, Hon Pak, head of Samsung Health, stated that the company was considering implementing a subscription service for the Health app, but this has yet to materialize. Pak also emphasized that Samsung needs to provide value commensurate with the money users spend: "If you really want me to pay for something, you'd better provide me with something more comprehensive."
While not entirely clear, it appears Samsung is aiming to introduce fees for at least some AI features by the end of 2025. This leaves users wondering which Galaxy AI tools might require payment in the future and which will remain free.
Google's impact on the paid model
One important factor to consider is that Samsung often uses the term “AI” instead of “Galaxy AI” when referring to features that may be subject to a fee. Most Galaxy AI tools are based on Google's technology, which raises the possibility that Google also wants to charge for its AI tools, leading Samsung to adjust accordingly.
In addition, Samsung has extensive experience in generating revenue from paid services and subscriptions. A prime example is the Secure Wi-Fi service, offered for $0.99 for 24 hours of secure Wi-Fi browsing or $1.99 per month.
With recent moves, it's clear Samsung is no stranger to the subscription model. Whether Samsung, Google, or both are the initiators, some AI features are currently free, while future features are still under development and may become available for purchase by the end of 2025. This opens a new chapter for Galaxy AI, promising richer user experiences and a stable revenue stream for Samsung.
