Iran faces too many difficulties at the 2026 World Cup. |
According to regulations, Iran was only allowed to enter the US one day before the match and had to leave the country the day after the game ended. This meant that the entire preparation, recovery, and travel process was significantly shortened.
Following the 2-2 draw against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 16, head coach Amir Ghalenoei called Iran the "most unfairly treated" team at the tournament, reflecting growing dissatisfaction within the team.
In a document sent to FIFA, FFIRI argued that these restrictions contradict the principle of ensuring fair playing conditions for teams participating in the World Cup. The federation emphasized that not being allowed to stay long enough at the competition venue directly affects physical condition and tactical preparation.
FFIRI also confirmed that they had twice requested early entry, 48 hours before each match, including the one against Belgium in Los Angeles, but were denied both times. The team is currently based in Tijuana, Mexico, instead of staying in the US for an extended period as originally planned.
Meanwhile, the US side insists these conditions were agreed upon in advance. A representative from the US Department of Homeland Security stated that Iran had agreed to the rule of "arriving one day before the match and leaving immediately after the match ends."
FIFA has acknowledged the problem but has not yet offered a concrete solution. Iran has two crucial group stage matches remaining against Belgium in Los Angeles and Egypt in Seattle in Group G of the 2026 World Cup.
