Italy has a new coach.

Legendary player and Sporting Director Gianluigi Buffon has confirmed that Gennaro Gattuso will be the new head coach of the Italian national team.

"We made the best decision we could," Buffon said in an interview with RAI Sport .

Italy are without a coach after sacking Luciano Spalletti, who led the "Azzurri" to a 0-3 defeat against Norway in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Europe. The departure of the former Napoli coach has forced the club's management to urgently search for a replacement.

Buffon said: “We worked hard and are now waiting to agree on the final terms. The president and the federation have had a busy time. I think we have finally made the best decision.”

Initially, Claudio Ranieri was considered the leading candidate for the position, but he committed to Roma as a special advisor and announced his retirement. Despite other potential candidates such as Stefano Pioli, Daniele De Rossi, and Fabio Cannavaro, Gattuso became the preferred choice of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).

Gattuso has managed AC Milan, Napoli, Marseille, and most recently Hajduk Split. At Napoli, he led the team to win the Coppa Italia 2019/20. As a player, Gattuso was known for his fiery, physical style of play. He made 73 appearances for the national team and scored 1 goal.

The Italian national team will return to the pitch with a 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Estonia on September 5th, followed by a clash with Israel on September 8th. This will be an opportunity for Gattuso to assert his leadership and rebuild the image of the "Azzurri" on the international stage.
