Thailand suffers shocking defeat.

On the night of June 10th, the Thai national team lost 1-3 to the underdog Turkmenistan in the third round of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.

Following Indonesia's heavy 0-6 defeat to Japan in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Vietnam and Thailand also suffered heavy losses in the third round of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers while playing away from home.

Vietnam's 0-4 defeat to Malaysia somewhat surprised experts. Meanwhile, Thailand's loss to Turkmenistan, a relatively low-ranked team (142nd in the FIFA rankings), was the biggest shock.

Turkmenistan has only one player who plays abroad, and their league is only a mid-level league in Kyrgyzstan. Before facing Thailand, Turkmenistan had only won once in the past two years - against Chinese Taipei.

Nevertheless, the Thai national team had a lackluster performance. The "War Elephants" had to play on artificial turf, but the condition of the pitch cannot be blamed. Coach Masatada Ishii was missing some key players but still had a quality squad at his disposal.

From the very first minute, Thailand suffered a setback when Titow opened the scoring for Turkmenistan. Although Supachai Jaided equalized in the 35th minute, just two minutes later, Thailand conceded again when Saparmammedov scored from close range.

Throughout the match, the Thai players lacked cohesion and concentration in defense. In the 66th minute, Saparow sealed a 3-1 victory for the home team from a well-executed corner kick.

The defeat was a shock for Thailand and a major blow to their standing in the region. After a hard-fought victory against Sri Lanka, the "War Elephants" continued to disappoint against an opponent ranked 43 places lower in the FIFA rankings.

After two matches, Thailand is second in Group D of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers with 3 points, one win behind Turkmenistan.
