Health news update July 17th: Vaccination rates for many vaccines remain low.

According to the Ministry of Health , in the first five months of the year, the vaccination rate in the expanded immunization program has not met the target.

Vaccine coverage is low.

Only the tuberculosis vaccine, measles vaccine, and DPT vaccine containing diphtheria have progressed according to plan, with a rate of 40%. Meanwhile, the vaccination rate for the "5-in-1" vaccine containing diphtheria and pertussis (DPT-VGB-Hib 3) for children aged 2, 3, and 4 months only reached 36.8%.

Experts recommend that people take their children for vaccinations on schedule and with the correct dosage.

Similarly, the vaccination rates for other vaccines such as the hepatitis B vaccine for newborns within the first 24 hours, the encephalitis vaccine, and the measles-rubella vaccine are only between 26% and 36%. This vaccine gap has led to the resurgence and increase of measles and diphtheria since the beginning of the year.

The Ministry of Health's 2025 Expanded Immunization Plan includes tasks to be implemented such as procuring vaccines for routine immunization, booster immunization, catch-up immunization, and deploying new vaccines in the expanded immunization program in 2025.

Provinces and cities will organize hepatitis B vaccination for newborns at hospitals and health centers, and will also vaccinate children with underlying conditions or those requiring screening at hospitals.

Local authorities organize regular vaccination campaigns at least every two months, carrying out catch-up vaccinations within the same month and providing supplemental vaccinations for those who have not been vaccinated or have not received all the required doses.

Hanoi : 109 more dengue fever cases and 11 outbreaks in one week.

According to the Hanoi Center for Disease Control (CDC), in the past week (from July 5th to July 12th), the entire city recorded 109 cases of dengue fever in 20 districts; among them, Dan Phuong district had the highest number of cases with 43.

Thus, cumulatively from the beginning of 2024 to date, the city has recorded 1,166 cases of dengue fever (an increase of nearly 1.2 times compared to the same period in 2023).

Additionally, 11 new dengue fever outbreaks were recorded last week in 6 districts: Dan Phuong, Ha Dong, Hoai Duc, Phuc Tho, Quoc Oai, Nam Tu Liem, and Thach That.

From the beginning of 2024 to the present, Hanoi has recorded 30 dengue fever outbreaks. Currently, 14 outbreaks are still active.

Over the past period, the Hanoi CDC has coordinated with relevant units to monitor the investigation and handling of outbreaks in the aforementioned districts and counties. Monitoring results show that the insect index in some outbreaks exceeds the high-risk threshold. Therefore, it is predicted that the number of cases may increase in the coming time and more new outbreaks may be recorded.

Along with the intensified professional activities of the Hanoi CDC, over the past week, localities have organized 24 environmental sanitation campaigns and disease prevention and control inspections in 77,462 households and 499 other areas (schools, public places, etc.); nearly 11,000 water containers containing mosquito larvae have been treated.

To ensure the effectiveness of disease prevention and control in the city, in the coming period, the Hanoi Health Department will continue to closely monitor and detect infectious disease patients early in the community and at designated medical facilities to understand the disease situation, organize investigations, and promptly handle cases and outbreaks.

In addition, regularly review, verify, and update information on cases on the Ministry of Health's software system, and report case and outbreak data as required.

At the same time, strengthen communication efforts and provide timely and comprehensive information about the disease situation and prevention and control measures.

The city's Department of Health also requested that districts, counties, and towns continue to focus on inspection and monitoring in communes and wards with a high rate of missed mosquito breeding sites and a high rate of incomplete mosquito spraying.

Specifically for the People's Committee of Dan Phuong district, the focus is on mobilizing resources to effectively implement disease prevention and control measures, preventing outbreaks from spreading and prolonging in the area.

According to the Hanoi CDC, in the past week, the city recorded 31 cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease, mostly sporadic cases, and 12 cases of whooping cough. Thus, from the beginning of 2024 to date, Hanoi has had 1,656 cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease (a 1.7-fold increase compared to the same period in 2023) and 173 cases of whooping cough across 28 districts and towns (while no cases were recorded during the same period last year).
