On the evening of December 8th at Chiang Mai Stadium (Thailand), the Philippines U22 team caused a sensation in the men's football event of the 33rd SEA Games by winning 1-0 against Indonesia U22 in the second match of Group C. This result gives the Philippines U22 6 points after 2 matches, officially making them the first team to qualify for the semi-finals of this year's regional games as group winners.
The earthquake
This is the first time the Philippines U22 team has reached the semi-finals of a SEA Games since the men's football tournament at the regional sports event stipulated that participating teams must be under 23 (or 22), which was in 2001.
Since their first appearance at the SEA Games in 2005, the Philippines U22/U23 teams have either been eliminated in the group stage or failed to qualify. In the two most recent tournaments, "The Azkals" finished last or second to last.
Philippine social media exploded after the national youth team made history at the regional tournament. Many fans shared and commented, congratulating the U22 Philippines and expressing condolences to U22 Indonesia. This defeat means the Indonesian team, once the reigning SEA Games gold medalists, now faces the risk of elimination from the group stage.
"What we need to do now is for the players to quickly forget the defeat and prepare for the upcoming crucial match against U22 Myanmar. I hope good things will come our way," said U22 Indonesia head coach Indra Sjafri.

Behind the miracle
Philippine football has traditionally not been strong at the youth levels. However, after years of strategic development and innovation, the Philippine Football Federation has finally reaped its first rewards with the current U22 team.
The U22 Philippines squad for the 33rd SEA Games features a mix of local and foreign-born players, including some who were "planted" in the national team in previous years. Notable examples include Santiago Rublico, Sandro Reyes, and Alex Monis.
Compared to many opposing players of the same age at this year's tournament, the core group of players in the Philippines U22 team have a lot of experience competing in Southeast Asia.
In addition, the U22 Philippines team also introduced many new players currently playing outside the region. Notable examples include the brothers Nicholas Guimaraes and Gabriel Guimaraes (Japan), and Otu Banatao (USA). These players have been starters for the U22 Philippines in recent matches. Banatao was the hero for "The Azkals" when he scored the only goal that sealed the victory against U22 Indonesia.
Leading the U22 Philippines team is coach Garrath McPherson, an Australian strategist born in 1983, who was only appointed less than a month ago. Due to the limited time, McPherson has chosen a simple playing style for the team, focusing on effective counter-attacks to maximize results.
