The attack, which took place on the night of June 1st and the early morning of June 2nd, focused on military -industrial facilities in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, as well as parts of the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions still under Ukrainian control, and the Dnepropetrovsk, Poltava, Khmelnitsky, and Sumy regions.
Fuel and transport facilities used by Ukrainian forces, along with military airfields, were also attacked.
During the attack, the Russian military used precision weapons on land and at sea, including hypersonic missiles and drones.
"The objectives of the attack were achieved. All targets were hit," the Russian Ministry of Defense statement said.
Several videos have been posted on social media, allegedly showing explosions in various areas of Ukraine.
Kyiv was the primary target, but Russia also attacked the cities of Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Zaporozhye, Poltava province, and other areas.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko confirmed that there were localized power outages in several districts of the capital during the airstrike.
The Ukrainian military stated that Russian forces launched a total of 729 weapons, including 73 missiles and 656 drones. The missiles used by Russia included Zircon missiles, Iskander-M ballistic missiles, Kh-101 cruise missiles, and Kalibr cruise missiles.
In total, 642 weapons were shot down by Ukrainian air defense systems.
Earlier, Moscow had warned it would carry out “systematic and consistent attacks” on Ukraine’s military infrastructure, including drone manufacturing facilities, command centers and “decision-making centers”.
Russia said the action was in retaliation for last month's drone attack on a dormitory in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, which killed 21 people. Ukraine denied carrying out the attack.
