Russia-Ukraine conflict on January 6th: Ukraine's counterattack in Kursk failed not only because the AFU's counterattack was blocked, but also because Russia attacked Ukraine's rear.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) have launched a large-scale counteroffensive in the Kursk region. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense , the enemy has advanced towards the Berdin farm in the Bolshesoldatsky district.
The Ukrainian army launched its offensive at approximately 9:00 AM on January 5th. With the support of two tanks, an engineering vehicle, and 12 armored combat vehicles (AFVs), the AFU hoped to halt the Russian advance towards Kursk.
The artillery and tactical air force of the Northern Task Force defeated the AFU's assault group. The Russian army destroyed all of the enemy's tanks and 7 armored fighting vehicles involved in the attack.
Russia repelled two counterattacks by AFU assault groups.

During the offensive, units of the Northern Army Group defeated a formation comprising four mechanized brigades and several airborne brigades of the AFU, a marine brigade, and territorial defenders. The enemy was pushed back in areas of 15 settlements, including Daryino, Leonidovo, Malaya Loknya, and Sudzha.
AFU losses in the Kursk region amounted to nearly 50,000 soldiers.
Since the attack on the Kursk region, the AFU has lost nearly 50,000 soldiers in combat. The enemy has also lost 73 tanks, 209 infantry fighting vehicles, 153 armored personnel carriers, 1,461 armored infantry fighting vehicles, 340 artillery pieces, and 44 rocket launchers (13 Himars, 6 MLRS).
According to estimates by the TASS news agency, the AFU has lost more than one million troops since the start of the Special Military Operation.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, Ukrainian losses amounted to 118,500 in 2022, 405,400 in 2023, and approximately 595,000 soldiers in 2024.
Russia issues an ultimatum at Velyka Novosilka
According to Military Summary, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has begun preparations for the Ramstein conference. An assessment of Ukraine's mobilization capabilities is underway.
The Ukrainian Defense Contact Group, also known as the "Ramstein Conference," is a U.S.-led group comprising more than 50 countries, including all 31 members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), most European Union (EU) nations, and allies from Africa, Asia, and South America. The Ukrainian Defense Contact Group is headquartered at Ramstein Air Base in Germany and meets regularly to coordinate military aid to Ukraine.
Prior to the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump, the AFU conducted limited offensive operations.
Currently, Velyka Novosilka appears to be completely surrounded, as after days of no information, a video emerged showing Ukrainian soldiers in the village being ordered to surrender via loudspeaker.
From the direction of Pokrovsk, the Russians have also begun attacking towns from the east. They are advancing closer and closer to the H32 road connecting Pokrovsk with Kostiantynivka and from the western flank towards Kotlyne.

Russia's attack "shatters" Ukraine's counterattack in Kursk.
In the Korenevsky district, after controlling the village of Kruglen'koye, Russian troops continued their advance towards the Malaya Loknya settlement. However, the Ukrainian defenses in the area were quite strong. It took the Russians considerable time before they could deploy ground forces to participate in the fighting.
Further south, in the Sudzha region, Russian units attacked from the village of Russkaya Konopelka and advanced very close to the city's outskirts near the village of Bondarevka. As in the Malaya Loknya region, the Russian offensives required significant fire support.
The Russian army also achieved another very important result. By capturing the village of Kurilovka, Russian unmanned aerial vehicle units effectively blocked the supply route for the AFU in the Kursk region.
The AFU's main supply route is 38K-004, approximately 8 km from Kurilovka. This is within the operating range of fiber optic-guided drones, making jamming impossible. The AFU would find it difficult to traverse this route easily and safely.
At the same time, the Russian army is gaining more strategically advantageous positions and launching an offensive aimed at neutralizing the AFU's counter-offensive positions from the north. An offensive south of Sudzha also raises questions about the possibility of continuing Ukraine's counter-offensive in the region.
