Ukraine is facing Russian advances in the east while also risking cuts to US military aid.
Russia is advancing in Donbass.
The Ukrainian military announced yesterday (February 10) that Russia had launched a new wave of attacks using dozens of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) targeting the capital Kyiv and the border province of Sumy. These Russian UAV attacks are occurring almost daily as Moscow's forces advance in eastern Ukraine amid a tightening of aid to Kyiv by its largest partner, the United States.
Russia releases images of destroyed Ukrainian tanks in the latest offensive in Kursk.
According to a February 10 report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW, USA), Russian forces have recently been closing in on the cities of Toretsk, Pokrovsk, and Velyka Novosilka in the Donetsk province. Russian troops are reportedly focusing on controlling the entire Donbass region, encompassing the Luhansk and Donetsk provinces. Almost all of Luhansk is already under Russian control, and while there is still a standoff in Donetsk, Moscow is steadily advancing and announcing the capture of new settlements each week.

Meanwhile, in the Kursk province (Russia), Apty Alaudinov, Deputy Director of the Russian Army's Political -Military Directorate, stated yesterday that most of the Ukrainian special forces deployed in August 2024 have been wiped out, and now the core force consists of conscripted troops. The Kursk operation aims to prevent Russia from launching a new offensive in southern Ukraine, and the areas seized there will serve as bargaining chips for Kyiv in future negotiations. However, the Ukrainian territory controlled in Kursk is only a very small fraction of what Russia holds in the provinces from eastern to southern Ukraine.
The US will reduce aid.
In addition to military disadvantages, Ukraine is also facing diplomatic pressure as the administration of US President Donald Trump is holding separate talks with Russia about the conflict.
Trump claims to have spoken with Putin by phone; how has the Kremlin reacted?
Over the weekend, President Trump revealed he had spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin about steps toward a solution, according to Reuters. Trump said he was trying to end the conflict and "making progress." The Kremlin neither confirmed nor denied the information, while Ukraine signaled it would not accept any deal without it. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that ending hostilities must be accompanied by security commitments for Kyiv.
This week, the Ukrainian delegation led by Mr. Zelensky will attend the Munich Security Conference (taking place from 14-16 in Munich, Germany), where they will present their views on ending hostilities and security commitments.
According to AP, US Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and the President's Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg will be in Munich. White House National Security Advisor Mike Waltz said that in these meetings this week, the US administration will begin discussions on withdrawing some aid to Ukraine and calling for Europe to play a greater role from now on.
"President Trump will end the conflict. In terms of security commitments, that will certainly be up to the Europeans," Waltz said, warning that the U.S. is prepared to impose tariffs and sanctions on Russia to force it to the negotiating table. President Trump had previously hinted at a possible meeting with President Zelensky this week.

The event will take place in Moscow on May 9; however, Beijing has not commented on this information.
