According to the American Academy of Dermatology, losing about 50-100 hairs a day is not considered a cause for concern. However, if you start noticing more hair falling out when brushing, washing, or on your pillow each morning, it could be a sign that your body is dehydrated.

Dr. Sheena Kapoor, a dermatologist in India, says that when the body is dehydrated, hair loses its natural shine, becomes dry and straw-like, brittle, and difficult to style. Hair also loses its elasticity; even a light pull can cause it to break.

Dehydration reduces blood flow to the scalp, limiting the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles. This decreases the ability of new hair to grow, while existing hair becomes weaker and more prone to falling out.

Furthermore, water plays a crucial role in cell regeneration. Without sufficient water, the body will be slow to produce new hair cells and will have difficulty replacing damaged hair.

Make it a habit to drink water regularly throughout the day.

Hair also contains about 10-15% water. When the body is dehydrated, the water in the hair is drawn away, making it drier, less elastic, and more prone to breakage.

To prevent hair loss due to dehydration, you can make changes to your daily routine, according to the health website Healthshots (India).

Drink enough water.

On average, an adult needs about 2.7 liters of water per day. Make it a habit to drink water regularly throughout the day, carry a water bottle with you, and set reminders if needed.

Replenish electrolytes when exercising intensely.

If you engage in high-intensity physical activity or experience significant dehydration, drink coconut water or other electrolyte-replenishing drinks to replenish essential minerals in your body.

Eat foods with high water content.

Besides drinking water, you should eat fruits and vegetables with high water content such as watermelon, cucumber, oranges, strawberries, or lettuce to further support hydration from within.

Limit drinks that cause dehydration.

Coffee, tea, soda, and alcohol all have diuretic effects, which can easily lead to dehydration. You need to moderate your consumption of these drinks to maintain healthy hair.

Gentle hair care

You should limit heat styling, avoid tying your hair too tightly, or using harsh chemicals, as these factors will only make your hair more prone to breakage and hair loss.
