VAR has repeatedly caused frustration in matches in England this season. |
VAR continues to be a focal point of controversy in the Premier League, with a large portion of fans no longer supporting it.
According to a survey conducted by the Football Supporters' Association (FSA) of nearly 8,000 fans from 20 clubs, 75% opposed the use of VAR. This is a significant figure given that the technology has been used for many years in England's top football league.
Beyond general opposition, the survey results also revealed clear disappointment. 90% of respondents believed VAR did not improve the football viewing experience, while 91% believed the technology diminished the excitement of celebrating goals.
Furthermore, 94% of respondents stated that VAR does not make watching football on television more appealing. 74% disagreed that the quality of refereeing has improved. Notably, 86% expressed concern about the expansion of VAR's intervention powers from June 1st, including reviewing corner kicks and yellow cards.
Thomas Concannin, representing the research team, argued that the negative reaction from fans was not surprising. According to him, VAR has been around long enough to reveal clear limitations, particularly its lengthy processing times and its potential to detract from the naturalness of football.
Nevertheless, VAR still receives support from clubs. In 2024, Wolverhampton's proposal to abolish VAR was rejected by 19 out of 20 teams. To change this decision in the future, at least 14 clubs would need to agree.
According to data from the Premier League's independent panel, the accuracy of decisions has reached 96-97% since VAR was implemented. Match interruptions have also decreased by 25% in the last two seasons.
The Premier League organizers acknowledge the need to minimize the impact of VAR and affirm that they will continue to make improvements to balance technology and the fan experience.
