Recently, many locals and tourists strolling along the Thượng Thành pedestrian walkway ( Hue Imperial Citadel) have expressed their outrage upon discovering numerous graffiti marks on the Hue Flagpole (the citadel's flagpole). These "ugly" drawings have seriously damaged the image of this ancient monument.
Numerous graffiti marks have been drawn on the walls of the Hue Citadel.
Most of these drawings are 1.5 meters or taller (measured from the ground), within the reach of an adult's body. A Thanh Nien reporter captured these images on May 17th.
The drawings are 1.5 meters or taller.
The ramparts of the Kỳ Đài monument are covered with graffiti.
Witnessing these graffiti drawings, many tourists expressed their indignation. "I feel sad because these drawings have significantly spoiled the beauty of the historical site. I hope that people passing by here will only visit and admire the scenery, and not engage in any acts of vandalism or alteration of anything on the site," said Mr. Nguyen Van Thuong (a tourist from Thai Binh ).
Mr. Nguyen Van Thuong (a tourist from Thai Binh province) expressed his outrage upon witnessing the historical site being vandalized with graffiti.
Sharing the same sentiment, Ms. Vo Tuong Vy (a tourist from Phu Yen ) also expressed her indignation, saying: "The act of vandalizing historical relics with graffiti is extremely offensive. These places are always popular destinations for tourists, so we should act with better awareness and civility to protect them."
Present at the Citadel, a security guard said that graffiti mostly occurs at night, but the limited number of guards makes it difficult to manage. These days, the force is putting up prohibition signs and reminding locals and tourists not to graffiti or sit on the citadel walls.
Staff at the Hue Ancient Citadel Conservation Center put up signs prohibiting graffiti and sitting on historical monuments.
Some of the newly installed structures have been damaged.
Many people have carved their names on the monument.
The guard posts were also vandalized with graffiti.
Several bags of trash were left on the city wall.
The Hue Citadel is located on a beautiful pedestrian walkway along the Upper Citadel. This walkway was opened to the public free of charge earlier this year by the Hue Ancient Citadel Relics Conservation Center, attracting many locals and tourists.
This unique pedestrian walkway connects the Nam Xương pass (inside the Thể Nhơn gate, also known as the Ngăn gate) to the Nam Thắng pass (inside the Quảng Đức gate, also known as the Sập gate), offering visitors a delightful experience as they admire the ancient citadel and the picturesque streets of Hue.
In response to this situation, the Hue Ancient Citadel Conservation Center has temporarily closed the Upper Citadel area to nighttime visitors from 7 PM daily. Simultaneously, they have directed the removal of several areas vandalized with graffiti on the citadel walls, aiming to restore its aesthetic appeal as soon as possible.
