On hot sunny days, the Tam Giang-Cau Hai lagoon area in Thua Thien Hue province is bustling with tourists. Visitors can enjoy boat rides to watch the sunrise, visit the floating market in the morning, or admire the sunset while immersing themselves in the fresh, peaceful atmosphere of the lagoon. Tourists can also join fishermen in catching seafood and enjoy delicious, freshly prepared dishes, creating memorable experiences…
Ms. Mai Anh from Hai Chau district, Da Nang city, shared her feelings: “This is my first time visiting Tam Giang Lagoon. It's very picturesque and beautiful. If you have the opportunity and time, I hope everyone will come here to experience it at least once.”
The Tam Giang-Cau Hai brackish lagoon area covers more than 52 square kilometers and boasts a diverse ecosystem. Responding to tourist demand, community-based tourism in this lagoon area has developed rapidly in recent years. Many tourism companies organize eco-tourism and lagoon tours. Community-based tourism models have emerged, increasing manpower and improving the quality of services for tourists.
Ms. Luong Thi Hien, a tour guide at the Tam Giang Community Tourism Service Cooperative in Quang Loi commune, Quang Dien district, said: “Through tourism, the local people will be less inclined to fish in the lagoon. Fish and shrimp will have the opportunity to grow and increase in number. Normally, people sell fish and shrimp to traders for about 200,000 VND/kg, but now, after processing them for tourists, the price can reach 300,000 VND/kg, bringing additional income to the people. This wasn't created by anyone; the people themselves know how to create their own source of income.”
Late March and early April mark the peak tourist season in the lagoon area. This provides local fishermen with additional income beyond their main job of fishing. Each fisherman and boatman becomes a "tour guide."
Mr. Ngo Chien, a boatman in Quang Loi commune, Quang Dien district, said: "Ensuring the safety of tourists is always a priority. Before passengers board the boat, we must ensure their safety. Passengers must wear life jackets, ensuring their safety throughout the entire trip to the lagoon."
Thua Thien Hue province has a diverse river system, a long coastline, and many large brackish lagoons stretching across various localities with a rich ecosystem. This is a rich tourism resource that Thua Thien Hue province is focusing on exploiting.
Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc, Director of the Thua Thien Hue Provincial Department of Tourism, stated: “Previously, Thua Thien Hue province had many water-based tourism activities such as dragon boat tours and fishing ground experience programs on lagoons… Compared to the existing potential, the quality of water-based tourism services is not diverse and has not been improved. Currently, under the direction of the Provincial People's Committee, the Transport Department, in coordination with the Tourism Department and local authorities, is researching and developing appropriate projects and plans to further develop water-based tourism activities and services.”
In addition to heritage tourism, Thua Thien Hue province is aiming to exploit the potential of river, sea, and lagoon tourism, develop community-based ecotourism, and contribute to diversifying and creating a unique brand and identity for tourism products in the ancient capital region.
