The cutoff scores for History Education majors have increased for the third consecutive year in most universities, reaching a peak of 28.58 this year.
For a provincial university like An Giang University, the cutoff score of 27.12 for the History Education major is unexpectedly high. Associate Professor Vo Van Thang, the university's rector, stated that this is the highest cutoff score in the university's 23-year history.
In fact, the cutoff scores for History Education majors skyrocketed (from 0.8 to nearly 10 points) last year and continue to reach new highs this year at many universities.
The highest admission score for this group of majors belongs to Hanoi Pedagogical University 2 in Vinh Phuc province. The History Education major at this university requires 28.58 points, meaning candidates must achieve more than 9.5 points per subject to be admitted. This is a slight increase compared to last year's admission score of 28.5.
History Education is also the major with the highest admission scores at a number of other universities, including Hanoi Pedagogical University, University of Education - Vietnam National University Hanoi, Vinh University, Thai Nguyen University of Education, Hue University of Education, Da Nang University of Education, Quy Nhon University, and An Giang University.
Among the largest teacher training universities, the entrance scores have increased for three consecutive years in most schools. However, Quy Nhon University saw a decrease of 2.75 points compared to last year. Hanoi University of Education, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, Can Tho University, and Saigon University saw a decrease in the entrance score for History Teacher Training this year, ranging from 0.01 to 0.84 points.

Professor Nguyen Van Minh, Rector of Hanoi Pedagogical University, believes that one of the main reasons for the high admission scores in this field is the limited number of places available for admission based solely on high school graduation exam scores.
For example, at Hanoi Pedagogical University, the Ministry of Education and Training allocated nearly 70 places for this major, but only 25 places were filled based on high school graduation exam scores.
Similarly, Master Le Phan Quoc, Deputy Head of the Training Department at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, said that in recent years, the demand for History teachers in localities has not been high. This year, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education was only allocated 37 quotas, a decrease of 20 quotas compared to last year, while other teacher training majors such as History - Geography, Technology, and Natural Sciences have quotas of about 200 each.
Saigon University was also only allowed to recruit 40 History Education students. Hanoi Pedagogical University 2, University of Education, and An Giang University were allocated 20 quotas each.
According to Mr. Quoc, the fact that History has become a compulsory subject in high school and may be a compulsory subject in the high school graduation exam from 2025 onwards has led to increased student interest in History Education.
On the other hand, in the context of increasingly high university tuition fees, the fact that teacher training students receive free tuition and a monthly living allowance of 3.65 million VND is also an advantage that attracts candidates to this field.
At Ho Chi Minh City University of Education alone, the number of applicants for the History Education major increased by 40% compared to last year. As a result, the cutoff score for this major is among the highest.

The high entrance exam scores for History Education majors are a positive sign, changing societal perceptions and views on history teachers, according to Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen Thao, a history teacher at Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted in Ho Chi Minh City. She explained that previously, society did not value history education due to low entrance scores, leading to a lack of confidence among history teachers upon graduation.
However, Ms. Thao and Mr. Quoc believe that while they are optimistic about the quality of history teachers in the future, it is premature to conclude that students like and prioritize history based solely on exam scores and admission standards.
"The teaching of History has initially gained trust, leading to high-achieving students choosing it, but don't be too quick to celebrate that high scores mean most students have come to love History more," Ms. Thao said.
