Why is South Korea turning its back on Google Maps?
South Korea is a leading technology hub in Asia, but Google Maps is still not fully operational due to security concerns and market competition.

Tourists visiting South Korea often download Kakao Maps and Naver Maps instead of Google Maps. The reason is that the South Korean government does not allow Google access to detailed map data.
For nearly 20 years, Google has repeatedly requested this but has always been denied on national security grounds. Authorities are concerned that the 1:5,000 scale map could reveal military bases and important facilities.
However, Professor Scott McQuire at the University of Melbourne argues that this concern is exaggerated because the data is already widely available. Another issue is the risk of Google overshadowing domestic apps like Naver and Kakao. Many scholars argue that the tension stems from "digital sovereignty " and technological dominance.
The South Korean State Council is expected to make a decision on Google's latest request in October. Readers are invited to watch the following video: Iris scanning tool to verify human identity | VTV24
