Are you a coffee lover? It may depend on your DNA, according to research journal Neuroscience News.
Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world , with 60 to 85% of Europeans and Americans drinking at least one cup per day.
Coffee drinking preferences are determined by genetic factors.
But coffee is not for everyone and many people cannot stand its bitter taste.
So why can't some people live without this delicious drink?
A new study, published in the scientific journal Neuropsychopharmacology , has found that in most cases, coffee preference is determined by genetic factors.
The study, conducted by scientists from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University in Ontario, Canada, and the University of California San Diego, looked at a large amount of genetic data, as well as participants' self-reported coffee consumption, to determine whether there was a clear link between DNA and coffee consumption.
Certain gene variants inherited from your parents will influence how much coffee you can consume.
We used this data to identify regions of the genome associated with whether a person is likely to consume more or less coffee, and then identified genes and biology that may influence coffee drinking, said lead author Dr. Hayley Thorpe, now a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.
The final analysis included data from the UK Biobank and data from the US DNA testing company 23andMe.
After conducting the analysis, the researchers found a clear association between genetic variants and coffee consumption.
Specifically, the results suggest that coffee consumption is influenced by genetics. In other words, certain gene variants inherited from your parents influence how much coffee you can consume.
This means that whether you like coffee and consume a lot of it is determined by your genes, according to Neuroscience News.
Additionally, researchers have found a genetic link between coffee consumption and obesity and other addictions.
