The play "Suburbanite," directed by Meritorious Artist Hoa Ha at the Dai Viet New Cai Luong Stage, was recently performed to commemorate the 49th anniversary of the reunification of the country and has been widely well-received by the public.

The mark of a new generation of actors.

Most viewers believe that actors Vo Minh Lam and Le Tu portrayed the roles of Mr. Bay Don and Mr. Tam Khoe very well, leaving a mark for the new generation of actors. According to those involved, the cast of "The Suburban People" has successfully replaced the image of the old generation of artists from the Saigon 1 Troupe, including People's Artist Ut Tra On, artists Thanh Duoc, Phuong Lien, Thanh Thanh Hoa, etc.

People's Artist Huu Danh happily announced that the play "Nang Hai Ben Nghe" (by author Ngoc Linh), which he adapted into a traditional Vietnamese opera, will be rehearsed by the Ho Chi Minh City Traditional Opera Theatre after the National Day holiday. Mentioning this work immediately brings to mind the famous artist who played the role of Nang Hai, Meritorious Artist My Chau. Many of Meritorious Artist My Chau's roles have captivated the public, such as the role of Hieu in the play "Hao Hoa Hotel" (by author Vu Kim, adapted into Cai Luong by the duo of playwrights Tran Ha and Dieu Huyen); Nang Hai in "Nang Hai Ben Nghe" (by the late author Ngoc Linh); and Lan in the play "Finding Life Again" (co-authored by Huy Lam, Hoang Kham, and Dieu Huyen). "This time, the Ho Chi Minh City Traditional Opera Theatre is very confident in entrusting the roles to young artists. It can be said that today's young generation of actors has a profound understanding of social life, and we believe that the succeeding generation will successfully perform roles on revolutionary themes," expressed People's Artist Huu Danh.

People's Artist Tran Ngoc Giau said that he is currently working diligently on staging the play "Comrade" by author Le Thu Hanh for Trinh Kim Chi's theater group to participate in the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Festival, which opens in November. This script participated in a writing workshop in Ninh Thuan , was highly praised, and won the A prize in 2023 from the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association.

Opening up new avenues

Since the beginning of 2024, many revolutionary-themed plays have been staged on both the stage and television. These plays, encompassing various genres such as Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera), spoken drama, Hat Boi (classical Vietnamese opera), and puppetry, have opened up new avenues for the performing arts, with most works receiving high praise and positive feedback from audiences.

"Theater professionals today are very dedicated to staging many plays on revolutionary themes. This reflects the civic responsibility of artists today, contributing to spreading the spirit of peace and the aspiration for independence and freedom in the hearts of artists and the public," observed People's Artist Tran Minh Ngoc.

According to experts, scripts on revolutionary themes are vibrant because the stories are unembellished, simple, and truthful, and the talent of the artists in their performances creates an appeal for viewers, eliciting tears and laughter from the audience. "I played the role of a revolutionary mother in the play 'Love, the Answer,' directed by Meritorious Artist Doan Ba after the country's reunification. I will always remember the atmosphere on the night of September 2nd, 1978, when I performed this play in Cu Chi. The audience cheered enthusiastically, and many mothers from the 'steel land' embraced me after the performance, saying, 'Why did you play the role of revolutionary mothers? It's like you've lived in this homeland!'" - People's Artist Ngoc Giau recounted emotionally.

"The theme of revolution is very close to our lives; there are revolutionary sites everywhere. Everywhere there are traces of people who sacrificed themselves for the independence of the country," emphasized People's Artist Pham Thi Thanh.

According to Meritorious Artist Ca Lê Hồng, the reason revolutionary plays live on in the hearts of artists and writers is because the works depict soldiers, showing their actions not for entertainment but to preserve noble ideals, the essential values of humanity: a peaceful and happy life.
