Based on the famous novel in verse by the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, "Eugene Onegin," under the direction of choreographer Boris Eifman, does not follow a familiar narrative style. Instead of maintaining the setting of 19th-century Russia, the work places the characters in a contemporary space – where social upheavals and changing values force people to confront choices, loss, and regret.
The story revolves around Eugene Onegin, a cold young man who rejects Tatyana's sincere love, only to realize its value when it's too late. From this missed opportunity, the play raises a question that resonates with all generations: Can people change before time closes its final chapter?
According to Mr. Nguyen Bao Anh, Artistic Director of the Saigon Symphony Orchestra (SPO), the work appeals to a wide audience because everyone has experienced the feeling of regret over things they didn't have time to preserve.
The appeal of "Eugene Onegin" also stems from its music, which combines the classical style of Tchaikovsky with modern rock, along with its expressive body language – a hallmark that has helped Eifman Ballet conquer dozens of countries for over four decades.
The fact that Ho Chi Minh City became the first stop for Eifman Ballet on its tour in Vietnam demonstrates the growing appeal of the international performing arts market, while also opening up more opportunities for the city's public to access world-class theatrical standards.
