Celebrating our new home by the Vu Gia River.

More than two months after the historic rains at the end of October 2025, joy has returned to Thuong Duc commune, Da Nang city, the "epicenter of the floods," as the "Quang Trung Campaign" launched by the Prime Minister is nearing its conclusion.

The joy of the upcoming New Year

In the memories of those who have lived for many years in the Dai Son mountain region, now part of Thuong Duc commune, the Vu Gia River has never been as harsh as during the rainy season at the end of October 2025. The floodwaters exceeded historical peaks, and in Dong Cham village at that time, houses, fields, and the lives of the people were precariously balanced by the ever-rising water.

As a member of the security and order protection force in Dong Cham village, Nguyen Dinh participated in evacuating people to safe locations and manning checkpoints to ensure safety in deeply flooded areas.

Running back and forth with disaster prevention and control efforts, upon returning home, the man was shocked to see his family's house and many belongings swept away by the floodwaters to the riverbank. For a family whose livelihood mainly depended on farming and freelance work, the sight of their house submerged meant facing the prospect of homelessness.

On January 9th – more than a month before the Lunar New Year of the Horse 2026 – on the site of their old house that had been swept away, Mr. Dinh's family received a new, spacious house from the police forces of various units and the Thượng Đức commune government as part of the "Quang Trung Campaign" launched by the Prime Minister .

Overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude for the rescue efforts, nothing brought Mr. Dinh more joy than stepping into his new home. No longer a simple wooden structure, his family's home is now a spacious house of over 80 square meters, with a mezzanine, gleaming tiled floors, and walls smelling of fresh lime. The frame of the old house, which was swept away, was found and placed right next to it, reminding the people of Dong Cham of the unprecedented flood in history.

In the same village of Dong Cham, about 1 kilometer from Mr. Dinh's house, Mr. Le Hong Linh's wooden house had its porch roof collapse and was swept away from its original foundation by about 7 meters. Many family belongings, books, and children's clothes sank into the Vu Gia River. A large area of crops and plants was also damaged.

“When the water rose, everyone panicked. All we could do was try to evacuate to safety while helplessly watching our belongings being swept away. Floods happen every year, but no one thought it would be as severe as this year,” Linh recounted.

Fortunately, thanks to the combined efforts of the forces involved in the "Quang Trung Campaign," Mr. Linh's house was repaired and restored to 80% of its original condition. He received additional bricks from the units to reinforce his house. His children also received donated books and school supplies so they could attend school with peace of mind.

“With Tet (Lunar New Year) approaching, if it weren't for the government, the police, and the forces involved in the ‘Quang Trung Campaign,’ my family wouldn't know how to survive amidst the chaos after the flood. My family is so grateful,” Linh shared.

"Overcoming the sun and rain" to build houses for the people.

The houses of Mr. Dinh and Mr. Linh are located deep within Dong Cham village. A few weeks before the handover ceremony for the new houses, it rained heavily in Thuong Duc. The road connecting from the CT02/National Highway 14B route to Dong Cham village, already showing signs of deterioration, became even more muddy. Travel, transportation of construction materials, and house construction were all severely hampered.

Lieutenant Colonel Le Van Viet, Deputy Head of the Thuong Duc Commune Police, shared that Thuong Duc commune has a hilly and mountainous terrain, making transportation difficult. In addition, harsh weather conditions also affect the implementation of the "Quang Trung Campaign".

With the urgent pace of work and the large volume of tasks, the Thuong Duc Commune Police are determined to concentrate all forces, coordinate with the Mobile Police Command and the Thuong Duc Commune government to implement the "Quang Trung Campaign" as assigned.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Le Van Viet, there were times when the force had to concentrate up to 50 or 60 people in a single day to carry out the work, even working through the night with a sense of urgency and determination to complete it early in order to create conditions for people to celebrate a joyful and warm Tet holiday.

Soldier Mai Tuan Vu, from Training, Professional Development and Vocational Education Center No. 3 under the Mobile Police Command, shared that after more than a month participating in the Quang Trung Campaign, he has gradually become accustomed to mixing mortar, building, and plastering. Originally from Vu Gia commune, only half an hour's motorbike ride from Thuong Duc commune, Vu put aside his homesickness to complete his mission. For Vu, each brick laid represents a meaningful motivation for the villagers to have warm homes after the floods.

According to Mr. Phan Trung Phi, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Committee of Thuong Duc commune, all 8 houses affected by natural disasters in Dong Cham, Dau Go, and Hoi Khach Tay villages within the commune have been repaired by forces participating in the "Quang Trung Campaign," including 3 houses that have been rebuilt and 5 houses that have been renovated.

With Tet (Lunar New Year) approaching, the villages of Thuong Duc are bustling with activity – though traces of the historic flooding from two months ago still remain on the pillars and walls of houses. The Vu Gia River, after a long period of muddy conditions due to heavy rain, has become calm again. The families of Mr. Dinh and Mr. Linh are once again busy earning a living; children are going to school; and trees are being planted again in the very places where the floodwaters passed. Smiles have returned to people's faces. The place that was once the "epicenter of the floods" is entering a season of hope, beginning with joy in the homes that were part of the "Quang Trung Campaign."
