Video : Thanh Hoa highlands in rice harvest season.
In late May and early June, mountainous districts of Thanh Hoa such as Ngoc Lac, Lang Chanh, Ba Thuoc, Quan Hoa... simultaneously enter the rice harvest season. The harvest atmosphere spreads throughout the villages, from early morning, people call each other, the sound of sickles and footsteps bustling down to the fields. That scene takes place regularly every year, bringing with it the hopes of the highland people for a prosperous and warm season.
Ms. Pham Thi Cuc, living in Dong Luong commune, Lang Chanh district, shared: “My family has more than 5 sao of rice. This year, the weather is favorable, the rain and sunshine are at the right time, so the rice grows well, the flowers are long, and the grains are firm. Although manual harvesting is hard work, having a good harvest is a joy. The rice here is mainly for eating, the surplus is saved to feed chickens and pigs, because it is not sold for much.”
In the mountainous areas, the fields are scattered, narrow and steep, so most people still have to harvest by hand. The only harvesting tool is a small, sharpened sickle to harvest the rice. Harvesting requires dexterity and flexibility, especially when moving a lot between fields on high mountains.
Ms. Truong Thi Thang, a Thai ethnic in Cu village, Thiet Ong commune, Ba Thuoc district, said: Every morning I go to the fields at 5am to harvest. I work from morning to afternoon to finish 2-3 plots. Here, everyone harvests by themselves, no one hires anyone, because the fields are small and machines cannot enter.
“Each bundle of rice after being cut must be dried right outside in the field to make it lighter, then carried or shouldered home. It is very hard work, but looking at the golden rice fields makes people feel excited,” Ms. Thang added.
Along the rice fields, women carry loads of rice uphill. The image is like a vivid picture of the mountainous region, where labor and life blend together in a rustic and peaceful way.
Mr. Pham Van Tien shared: “This year the rice is very fragrant. Each variety has a different smell, but the upland sticky rice is the most fragrant. The rice is used to make rice to eat all year round. This is a good harvest, everyone is happy. The whole village is like having a festival, some are harvesting, some are carrying loads, children are playing everywhere.”
The scent of ripe rice spreads throughout the space, mixed with the smell of damp soil and mountain wind, creating a familiar feeling.
Each harvest season not only leaves behind full granaries, but also preserves in people’s hearts beautiful memories of life sprouting on each field in the highlands of Thanh Hoa. That golden season – the color of prosperity, of hope, and is an eternal symbol of mountain life that is still changing day by day.
