We began our journey from Can Tho , a city known as the "Western Capital" and the capital of the Mekong Delta.
From Can Tho, if you travel northwest along the Hau River, the left bank includes the areas of Vinh Long , Sa Dec, Cao Lanh, Hong Nguy, and Tan Chau.
The right bank includes Can Tho, Long Xuyen, Chau Doc, and An Phu ( An Giang ). It can be said that the vast delta region through which the Hau River flows is the most famous rice-growing area in Vietnam, and arguably the largest in Southeast Asia.
Agricultural economic resources and waterway trade are distinctive features that form a very important part of the Mekong Delta region.
The abundance of the delta region has created a unique culture that harmonizes with the natural conditions. Traveling along the banks of the Hau River, we discovered that most of the busiest floating markets in Southern Vietnam are concentrated on these river branches.
These include Nga Nam Floating Market (Soc Trang), Nga Bay Floating Market (Phung Hiep), Cai Rang Floating Market (Can Tho), and Long Xuyen Floating Market (An Giang). Most of these floating markets are still in operation.
Along the Hau River, besides the vast rice paddies of Dong Thap Muoi and the Long Xuyen Quadrangle, we encountered floating fish farms, some stretching for kilometers. In addition to the aquatic resources obtained from these farms, the nomadic life on the rafts is also recognized as a unique characteristic of the local people – leisurely and free-spirited.
