Overcoming challenges to enter the new school year.

Along with the rest of the country, schools in Que Phuoc and Nong Son communes (Da Nang city) have strived to overcome difficulties in infrastructure and teaching staff to ensure the best teaching and learning conditions for students in the new school year 2025-2026.

Supporting students to go to school.

At Vo Chi Cong Primary and Secondary School (Que Phuoc commune), this school year has 173 students in both levels, distributed across 3 school locations in Phu Gia and Dong An villages, with 12 classes. From the beginning of August, the staff and teachers focused on cleaning the school premises, reviewing facilities, and preparing all necessary textbooks and learning materials so that all students could start the new school year.

Mr. Tran Dinh Son, the school principal, said: “We pay special attention to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, striving to ensure that no student lacks books or supplies when coming to class. In addition, each grade level has developed specific teaching plans, ready for the new curriculum.”

Over the years, the school's facilities have been gradually invested in, basically meeting the needs of teaching and learning. However, with three scattered school locations, students' travel remains difficult, especially during the rainy season. Some students are orphans or come from disadvantaged families, and they desperately need support to continue attending school. Thanks to the joint efforts of organizations and individuals, many gifts and scholarships have been given directly to poor students.

A prime example is Doan Nguyen Gia Tran, a 4th-grade student in class 4B. Orphaned at a young age, she lives with her grandmother and received a scholarship from the "Wave and Computers for Children" program, along with many practical gifts, at the beginning of this new school year. Gia Tran emotionally shared: "I am very happy to receive this support. This motivates me to study harder and become a useful person in the future."

According to Mr. Phan Thanh Thanh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Que Phuoc commune, there are currently 6 schools in the area, ranging from preschool to junior high school. To prepare for the new school year, the schools have completed the necessary infrastructure, including desks, chairs, restrooms, and electricity and water systems; they are also focusing on environmental hygiene and school safety.

At the preschool level, the commune continues to improve the enrollment rate of children, focusing on the quality of daycare services and ensuring food safety and hygiene in the kitchen.

For lower secondary schools, plans have been developed for a two-session-per-day teaching schedule starting from the 2025-2026 school year. "In addition, relevant departments and agencies of the commune are coordinating with schools to promptly address difficulties regarding facilities, equipment, and staffing, creating the most favorable conditions for teaching and learning," Mr. Thanh emphasized.

Overcoming difficulties

In Nong Son commune, schools are also striving to prepare for the new school year despite many difficulties. Phan Chau Trinh Secondary School currently has 646 students, divided into 17 classes. The school has 18 rooms, of which only 10 are classrooms and 6 are subject-specific rooms. If implementing a two-session-per-day teaching schedule as required by the 2018 General Education Program, the school still lacks 8 rooms, especially 2 computer labs and 2 foreign language labs. Equipment for the new program has not yet been fully provided.

According to Mr. Ho Van Nhan, the school principal, the school currently lacks three teaching positions (two math teachers and one history teacher). To ensure teaching continues, the school has to hire additional teachers on contract and arrange for teachers to teach different subjects in some departments. "The facilities are dilapidated, and there aren't enough desks and chairs, so we are forced to reuse old ones, which somewhat affects students' learning," Mr. Nhan said.

Meanwhile, Pham Phu Thu Primary School has 276 students in 12 classes. The school basically has enough classrooms and is able to organize two teaching sessions per day.

“To prepare for the new school year, we have repaired dilapidated facilities, purchased additional equipment, cleaned the school premises, and promptly hired teachers to fill the vacancies. Despite the difficulties regarding the size of the multi-purpose room, the school staff is determined to overcome these challenges to improve the quality of teaching and learning,” shared Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung, Principal of Pham Phu Thu Primary School.

According to Mr. Le Anh Tuan, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Nong Son commune, the commune currently has 7 schools with 105 classes and 2,911 students. While the primary school level has basically met the classroom requirements, the situation at the secondary school level remains challenging. Nguyen Duy Hieu Secondary School only has 12 classrooms and needs to renovate subject-specific rooms to supplement the existing ones; Phan Chau Trinh Secondary School lacks 8 classrooms.

"To address this, the schools proactively contracted 32 teachers with the appropriate expertise, while also mobilizing support from philanthropists and staff to help disadvantaged students. The schools also made maximum use of the equipment already provided, improved old equipment, and allocated self-funded budgets to purchase additional supplies," Mr. Tuan said.
