The 2026 World Cup hasn't even started yet, but organizers in the US are facing a worrying problem. More than 2,000 staff members at SoFi Stadium, one of the tournament's most important venues, have voted to strike after contract negotiations with the catering provider stalled.
This workforce includes bartenders, servers, cooks, and dishwashers. While the vote doesn't necessarily mean they'll stop working, the possibility of a strike right before the US team's opening match against Paraguay on June 12th is now a real possibility.
According to representatives of the UNITE HERE Local 11 union, workers are not only dissatisfied with the wage and benefits policies but also concerned about workplace safety. Recent crackdowns on immigration in the US have made many workers feel insecure, even while serving at one of the world's biggest sporting events.
Kurt Petersen, co-chair of the union, argued that the negotiation process was too slow, given that the World Cup was expected to generate huge revenues for the relevant organizations. The union also demanded clear commitments to job protection and restrictions on outsourcing.
Conversely, Legends Global, the hospitality provider at SoFi Stadium, affirmed that they are still working to reach an agreement with the union. The company stated that their goal is to provide the best possible experience for fans during the World Cup.
The incident is attracting a lot of attention because SoFi Stadium is the venue for the US team's opening match. With the 2026 World Cup expected to attract millions of viewers in the US, Canada, and Mexico, any strike could significantly impact the organization and the fan experience.
