In 1994, when the ball rolled on American soil, a total of nearly 3.6 million spectators flocked to the stadiums to witness the spectacular performances. This was also the record for the number of live spectators at a World Cup .

According to FIFA figures, this year's World Cup, up to matchday 44, has seen attendance exceed 2.85 million people, with stadiums achieving a 99.6% occupancy rate. This is only slightly lower than the 2006 World Cup in Germany. However, the United States boasts enormous stadiums. Therefore, in terms of attendance, it still far surpasses the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
On the other hand, this year's World Cup is significantly larger than previous editions, with a total of 104 matches. Therefore, attendance figures are sure to break all-time records. Experts believe this shows that Americans don't like to miss out on global events.
The 2026 World Cup could also set another record—ticket revenue. For the first time, FIFA is implementing a flexible pricing model, adjusting prices based on demand to optimize sales and audience numbers. For example, a last-minute ticket for the match between Paraguay and Australia cost $450. On the secondary market, prices are even higher. TicketData, a company that tracks ticket resale prices, reports an average "entry" price of $798 for group stage matches.
FIFA forecasts that revenue from ticket sales for the 2026 World Cup will exceed $3 billion. Experts, however, believe this figure could be even higher, potentially reaching $4 billion. This is significantly higher than the approximately $949 million in 2022 and $712 million in 2018.
“American consumers are willing to pay for what they consider a premium sporting event,” said John Grady, a sports professor at the University of South Carolina. Americans not only love soccer in general, but also high-quality products. Americans want the best, and the World Cup is the pinnacle of those products.
