There were no surprises in this round of World Cup qualifiers, as powerful teams like Senegal and Ivory Coast both won, officially securing the top spot in their respective groups.
Playing at home, star player Sadio Mane shone brightly, helping Senegal thrash Mauritania 4-0 and maintain their lead in Group B with 24 points. They are second with the Republic of Congo with 22 points.
In Group F, Ivory Coast also easily defeated Kenya 3-0, thus finishing the first round with 26 points, just one point more than Gabon.
Ivory Coast and Senegal were the last African teams to qualify – out of a total of 9 official tickets allocated by FIFA to the "black continent".
Previously, the teams from Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, Cape Verde, and South Africa had secured their tickets in that order.
Thus, the nine official tickets to the World Cup for Africa – secured by the top nine positions in the first stage – have been confirmed.
The four best-performing second-placed teams will advance to Stage 2, competing for a spot in the intercontinental play-offs.
These four teams are Gabon, Congo, Cameroon, and Nigeria. They will play knockout matches in November to determine the winner, who will advance to the intercontinental play-offs.
Six teams representing different continents will participate in the intercontinental play-off round (taking place early next year), to determine the owners of the final two tickets to the 2026 World Cup.
