What is E10 gasoline?
E10 gasoline is a blend of approximately 90% traditional mineral gasoline and 10% fuel ethanol. Ethanol is an alcohol derived from biomass such as corn, sugarcane, or cassava, used to reduce carbon emissions and increase the proportion of renewable fuels.
Thanks to this bio-component, E10 gasoline is considered to have the potential to reduce environmentally polluting emissions compared to traditional gasoline.
Does E10 gasoline separate from water when stored for a long time?
Unlike conventional gasoline, E10 gasoline contains ethanol, which has the ability to absorb moisture from the air. Ethanol is essentially a polar alcohol, so it is able to dissolve water, while conventional gasoline has almost no such property.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade , practical tests have shown that E10 gasoline is not as prone to phase separation as many people fear. The agency cited test results showing that under conditions of storage in glass test containers, E10 gasoline did not experience phase separation after 3 months. This is also the result recently announced by Petrolimex.
Globally , a 2016 report by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in the US indicated that even under consistently high temperatures and humidity, E10 bioethanol requires approximately three months or more to absorb enough water for water separation to occur.
Fuel experts from the U.S. Department of Energy suggest that the risk of water separation is often more noticeable in cases where fuel is stored for extended periods in humid environments, such as on boats, generators, infrequently used vehicles, or in improperly sealed containers. In these situations, moisture can accumulate over time, increasing the risk of water contamination exceeding the E10 solubility limit.
Therefore, the Ministry of Industry and Trade advises users not to store E10 gasoline for too long and to ensure that the storage tank is always tightly sealed to prevent water or moisture from entering the fuel.
Instead, fuel should only be used for the appropriate amount of time and stored properly. For vehicles that are used infrequently, owners should start the engine periodically, check the fuel level, and perform maintenance as recommended by the manufacturer.
