According to Reuters , electric vehicles from Geely's Lotus brand will officially be available in Canada next month. This is the result of a landmark trade agreement between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
This batch of vehicles will pave the way for a wave of Chinese-owned and manufactured electric vehicles to officially reach Canadian consumers. The new agreement allows up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles to be imported into Canada annually at preferential tariffs. This is seen as an effort by Prime Minister Mark Carney's administration to diversify its trade balance and reduce its deep dependence on the US market.
"Geely's electric vehicles will arrive in Canada next month. A large-scale handover ceremony is expected to be held in Montreal when the shipment arrives," a Reuters source said.
Lotus Cars has not yet commented on requests for comment. Canadian customs representatives also declined to provide details about the specific shipments due to the company's trade confidentiality.
Besides Geely, other major Chinese automakers such as Chery and BYD are actively cooperating with Canadian government agencies to finalize the last legal procedures. Previously, some test vehicles from these companies were brought to Canada to assess their adaptability to the local climate and environmental conditions.
"I hope that by this fall, genuine Chinese electric vehicle brands will have completed all the necessary procedures to officially enter the Canadian market," the Chinese ambassador to Canada told Reuters .

Previously, BYD's executive vice president revealed to international media plans to potentially begin selling vehicles in North America next year. Meanwhile, Tesla has already taken a proactive step by importing vehicles assembled at its Chinese factory into the Canadian market.
Alongside importing fully assembled vehicles, Canada also aims to attract joint ventures and direct investment into its domestic electric vehicle supply chain.
The Chinese ambassador to Canada noted that Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers are very interested in establishing joint ventures, but for now, they will focus on boosting sales and assessing actual market demand. Prime Minister Mark Carney's decision to open the market to Chinese electric vehicles has faced strong criticism from some US officials and lawmakers.
During his visit to China in January, Mark Carney announced that Canada aims to increase its exports to China by 50% by 2030. However, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated last month that this figure could rise to 100%.
To double exports to China, growth needs to reach nearly 15% annually over the next five years. Ambassador Wang Di added that Canadian exports have increased by 27.5% in the five months since Mr. Carney's visit.
