According to Mr. Pham Chi Quang, Director of the Monetary Policy Department (State Bank of Vietnam), in the interbank market (Market 1), overnight interest rates are currently very low at 0.2-0.5%, creating favorable conditions for commercial banks to lend at low interest rates. In the secondary market (Market 2), the average deposit interest rate applied by commercial banks to newly arising transactions is only about 3.9%/year, while the average lending interest rate for newly arising transactions is 6.7%/year, a decrease of over 2% compared to the end of 2022.
"It can be said that both deposit and lending interest rates at commercial banks are currently significantly lower than before the COVID-19 pandemic," Mr. Quang said.
Regarding the gap between lending and deposit interest rates, Deputy Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam, Dao Minh Tu, stated that some high interest rates still remain from previous terms, as commercial banks mobilized funds at high interest rates at that time. "However, this level will certainly not be maintained by 2024," the Deputy Governor emphasized.
