Coffee exports to Germany have increased sharply.

Citing statistics from the General Department of Customs, the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) reported that in November 2023, Vietnam's coffee exports to Germany reached 18.15 thousand tons, valued at 48.55 million USD, an increase of 1,590.1% in volume and 1,317.3% in value compared to October 2023, and an increase of 14.3% in volume and 46.9% in value compared to November 2022.

However, overall for the first 11 months of 2023, Vietnam's coffee exports to Germany still decreased by 12.9% in volume and 6.9% in value compared to the same period last year, reaching approximately 168.13 thousand tons, worth 383.72 million USD.

According to information from the Import-Export Department, in November 2023, the average export price of Vietnamese coffee to Germany reached US$2,675 per ton, a decrease of 16.1% compared to October 2023, but an increase of 28.5% compared to November 2022. For the first 11 months of 2023, the average export price of Vietnamese coffee to Germany reached US$2,282 per ton, an increase of 6.9% compared to the same period last year.

In the first 11 months of 2023, Vietnam exported Robusta coffee, processed coffee, and Arabica coffee to the German market. Exports of Robusta and Arabica coffee decreased, while exports of processed coffee remained stable. Robusta coffee accounted for 92.54% of exports to Germany; processed coffee accounted for 3.88%; and Arabica coffee accounted for 3.58%.

According to data from the European Statistical Agency (Eurostat), in the first 10 months of 2023, Germany imported 768.86 thousand tons of coffee from non-EU markets, worth approximately 2.71 billion EUR (equivalent to 2.96 billion USD), a decrease of 15.3% in volume and 25% in value compared to the same period last year.

Germany's coffee supply from outside the EU mainly comes from the following markets: Brazil , Vietnam, Honduras, Uganda, and Colombia. According to Eurostat, in the first 10 months of 2023, Germany reduced its coffee imports from Vietnam by 5.0% in volume and 5.1% in value compared to the same period in 2022, reaching approximately 192.83 thousand tons, worth 426.43 million EUR (equivalent to 464.38 million USD).

Nevertheless, Vietnam's market share of coffee in Germany's total imports from non-EU markets still increased from 22.36% in the first 10 months of 2022 to 25.08% in the first 10 months of 2023.

According to economic experts, Germany is a potential market for the Vietnamese coffee industry. In recent years, Germany's coffee imports from Vietnam have remained stable, accounting for 18 to 25% of Germany's total coffee imports. Furthermore, Germans consume coffee daily, with 72.7% drinking it at home, 7.9% at work, and 5.2% at friends' or relatives' homes. Each German consumes 169 liters of coffee per year, more than German beer (90 liters/year).

Analyzing the specific export potential of Vietnamese goods to Germany, the Vietnamese Trade Office in Germany stated that the opportunity to bring Vietnamese goods into Germany remains high. German consumers are willing to use high-quality, competitively priced products from developing countries.

German consumers are also becoming increasingly open to using Asian products in general and from Vietnam in particular. They are willing to use imported products from developing countries if those products have clear origins, good quality, and competitive prices. Meanwhile, Vietnam has many strong products that German consumers have high or increasing demand for, such as: wood products, clothing, footwear, coffee, tropical fruits and vegetables… ”, the Vietnamese Trade Office in Germany reported.
