According to newly released data from the General Statistics Office, in the first two months of May 2025, textiles and garments were one of the four industry groups with export turnover exceeding 5 billion USD.

Specifically, in the first two months of 2025, the textile and garment industry achieved $5.634 billion, an increase of 9.3% compared to the same period last year. The export figures for the first two months are still within expectations, as many domestic textile and garment businesses already have orders until the second quarter of 2025. However, there are signs of a slowdown from the third quarter of 2025 onwards, as customers are still waiting to see the impact of US tariff policies on the economy .

According to Mr. Hoang Manh Cam, Deputy Chief of the Board of Directors' Office of Vietnam Textile and Garment Group, the new US tariff measures have not targeted Vietnam, and Vietnam is also the least affected country in the ASEAN region in terms of reciprocal tariffs; the textile and garment industry is also not subject to additional tariffs.

Historical data shows that Vietnam's textile and garment exports to the US continue to grow well and have the potential to increase their market share in the country. Vietnamese textile and garment businesses need to improve their compliance with the rules of origin under the US anti-forced labor law regarding China.

Similarly, Mr. Pham Xuan Hong - Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Textile, Garment and Embroidery Association - also acknowledged that the US tariff policy has not had an immediate impact on the Vietnamese textile and garment industry. And the US remains the largest export market for the industry to date.

Regarding the US market, the Vietnam Trade Office in the US recently provided information about the US Trade Representative's proposal to impose fees on ships manufactured in China.

According to assessments by trade officials and several legal consulting firms, the proposal by the US trade representative, if implemented, would directly impact the logistics and operational costs of international shipping companies, including those in Vietnam.

This could also directly affect the prices of exported goods, especially textiles and garments, because the main export markets for the industry are still distant markets such as the US and the EU.
