For nearly 10 days now, Ms. Tran Thi Hong's family in Pha Cung village has been busy harvesting longan this year. Every day, Ms. Hong's family hires more than 10 workers from the commune to harvest and pack the goods in time for the day's orders for traders. With 5 hectares of longan, this year her family plans to harvest only about 40 tons, down 60-70% compared to last year. However, thanks to proper care, the longan has a beautiful appearance, thin skin, and thick flesh, so her family's longan always sells for a high price.
Ms. Tran Thi Huong - Pha Cung Village, Long Phieng, Yen Chau, Son La : This year the yield is not much, each day we collect 1 ton or 2 tons depending on the purchase quantity, the average price depends on the time, on each fruit, but the current average is at 22,000 to 25,000-26,000 VND/kg. We are also very excited because this year the yield has decreased but the price is good for farmers.
Currently, Long Phieng commune has 619 hectares of longan, concentrated in Pha Cung, Yen Thi, and Mo Than villages. Despite unfavorable weather conditions, the commune has coordinated with the district's professional agencies to propagate and mobilize people and cooperatives to invest in caring for the areas with flowers and fruits according to the correct technical process. Strengthening product consumption connections for households and cooperatives. This year, the commune's longan output reached about 3,000 tons.
Mr. Vi Van Quynh - Vice Chairman of Long Phieng Commune People's Committee, Yen Chau, Son La: Currently, most households and cooperatives in the commune have applied automatic irrigation to ensure the productivity of longan trees. Currently, people have focused on harvesting early-ripening longan trees, currently people are selling at a price of 25,000 to 30,000 VND per kg, next we just wait for people to take care of the late-ripening longan area to increase income.
Yen Chau district has more than 2,800 hectares of longan, of which more than 2,200 hectares are being harvested. Due to the prolonged drought since the beginning of the year affecting the ability to flower and set fruit, through review and assessment, the expected longan output is expected to decrease to 12,500 tons, down 50% compared to the plan; compared to 2023, down 33.7% (6,360 tons). As of August 14, 2024, the whole district has consumed about 50 tons of longan fruit, with an average selling price of 25,000 VND/kg, and the value of harvested products is 1.25 billion VND.
Mr. Le Huy Phong - Vice Chairman of Yen Chau District People's Committee, Son La: Determining that such output will give a relatively good price compared to the market in previous years. Therefore, the district has also focused on directing cooperatives and key enterprises in the district as well as maintaining key customers who have regularly purchased for many years to focus on purchasing products from longan fruit, mainly for consumption at wholesale markets nationwide.
Longan in Yen Chau district usually ripens later than other regions in the province. Along with that, thanks to the quality of the fruit being fragrant and sweet, with thick, crispy flesh, bright and beautiful skin color and being harvested at a time when the longan market is usually "late", so although the longan crop in Yen Chau this year was a bad one, people were able to sell it at a high price, and people were very excited and confident in production./.
