For nearly 10 days now, the family of Ms. Tran Thi Hong in Pha Cung village has been busy with this year's longan harvest. Every day, Ms. Hong's family hires more than 10 workers from the commune to harvest and pack the fruit to meet daily orders from traders. With 5 hectares of longan trees, her family expects to harvest only about 40 tons this year, a 60-70% decrease compared to last year. However, thanks to proper care, the longan has a beautiful appearance, thin skin, and thick flesh, so her family's longan always sells at a high price.
Ms. Tran Thi Huong - Pha Cung Village, Long Phieng Commune, Yen Chau District, Son La Province : This year the yield is not high, we harvest 1 or 2 tons per day depending on the amount purchased. The average price varies depending on the time and the quality of the fruit, but currently it is averaging 22,000 to 25-26,000 VND/kg. We are very happy because although the yield has decreased this year, the price is good for the farmers.
Currently, Long Phieng commune has 619 hectares of longan orchards, concentrated in the villages of Pha Cung, Yen Thi, and Mo Than. Despite unfavorable weather conditions, the commune, in coordination with specialized agencies of the district, has encouraged people and cooperatives to focus on investing in proper care according to technical procedures for the areas that are flowering and bearing fruit. They have also strengthened connections for product consumption for households and cooperatives. This year, the total longan production of the commune is expected to reach approximately 3,000 tons.
Mr. Vi Van Quynh - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Long Phieng Commune, Yen Chau District, Son La Province: Currently, most households and cooperatives in the commune have applied automatic irrigation systems to ensure high yields for longan trees. People are currently harvesting early-ripening longan, selling them at prices ranging from 25,000 to 30,000 VND per kilogram. Next, we are just waiting for the people to finish tending to the late-ripening longan trees to increase income.
Yen Chau district has over 2,800 hectares of longan trees, of which more than 2,200 hectares are currently producing fruit. Due to the prolonged drought since the beginning of the year affecting flowering and fruit setting, a review and assessment predicts that the longan production will decrease to 12,500 tons, a 50% reduction compared to the planned target; and a 33.7% decrease compared to 2023 (6,360 tons). As of August 14, 2024, the entire district had sold approximately 50 tons of longan fruit, with an average selling price of 25,000 VND/kg, bringing the total value of harvested products to 1.25 billion VND.
Mr. Le Huy Phong - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Yen Chau District, Son La Province: " We have determined that with such a production volume, we will get a relatively good price compared to the market in previous years. Therefore, the district has focused on directing cooperatives and key businesses in the district, as well as maintaining long-standing regular purchasing partners, to concentrate on purchasing longan products mainly for consumption at wholesale markets throughout the country."
Longan in Yen Chau district usually ripens later than in other areas of the province. Along with that, thanks to the fruit's fragrant sweetness, thick, crisp flesh, bright and beautiful peel color, and the fact that it is harvested when the longan market is usually "ending," this year, despite a poor harvest, farmers in Yen Chau are selling their longan at high prices, making them very happy and confident in their production.
