In the first doctorate stele built in Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam showing names, ages and hometowns of Confucian doctor laureates who passed the examination held in 1442, there was a narration compiled by Great Scholar Than Nhan Trung that includes the following sentence: “Talents are life-sustaining elements of the nation, so as long as these elements are properly treated, the nation will be powerful and prosperous, or else it might turn weak and fading, and that is the reason why all wise Emperors care for the encouragement of talents”. This has always been considered the manifesto of Confucian education of Vietnamese feudal dynasties in particular, and Vietnam’s education and training cause in general. In order to foster talents to build and preserve the nation, education and training is a must, which is effected by schools from national to local levels, either public or private facilities established by individual teachers to educate and train people. For thousands of years, Thang Long – Hanoi has been famous as the sacred land of Vietnam’s education, which houses Quoc Tu Giam Thang Long – the earliest and biggest university of Dai Viet in middle ages, Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc school – a leader of Vietnam’s new education in modern times, and many famous private schools owned by well-known scholars. The culture of Thang Long – Hanoi is demonstrated firstly and above all in the convergence, sublimation and emanation through the last one thousand years, as well as in the most durable symbol of education: the ancient schools in Thang Long – Hanoi.
