10 foods that improve bloating

VnExpressVnExpress03/06/2023

Certain foods, such as cucumbers, asparagus, and ginger, help the digestive system function well and improve symptoms of bloating.

According to Dr. Dao Tran Tien (Deputy Head of the Gastroenterology Department, Tam Anh General Hospital , Hanoi ), people with bloating often feel a tightness and discomfort in their abdomen; this can be due to many factors such as constipation, swallowing air, overeating, and weight gain. In addition, some conditions can cause bloating and affect the digestive system, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, irritable bowel syndrome, overgrowth of small intestinal bacteria, gluten intolerance, or lactose intolerance.

Some everyday foods, like cucumbers, not only provide nutrients but also help alleviate bloating.

Cucumber

Cucumbers contain quercetin, a flavonoid antioxidant that helps reduce swelling. Cucumbers inhibit the activity of enzymes that cause inflammation. You can eat cucumbers or drink cucumber juice to reduce bloating.

Rice

Limiting starchy vegetables like potatoes and corn can help reduce bloating. Rice is a starch that doesn't produce gas. You can choose rice instead of corn or potatoes to avoid bloating and abdominal distension.

Banana

A medium-sized banana contains 9% of the recommended daily intake of potassium. Potassium-rich foods prevent water retention by regulating sodium levels in the body, which can reduce bloating caused by salt. Other potassium-rich foods you can eat include raisins, dried apricots, spinach, lentils, and oranges. Bananas also contain some fiber that helps reduce or prevent constipation.

Papaya

The enzymes in papaya break down proteins in the digestive system, ensuring smoother digestion. Most tropical fruits are anti-inflammatory and high in fiber, supporting digestive health.

Pineapple

Pineapple is mostly water, which helps combat bloating by keeping your body hydrated. Bromelain, an enzyme in pineapple, enhances health by breaking down proteins. Bromelain is one of the enzymes that can break down collagen.

Yogurt, probiotics

Probiotics are good bacteria in the gut that can regulate digestion and protect overall digestive health. You can take probiotics daily to reduce bloating.

Asparagus

According to Doctor Tien, asparagus is one of the effective foods for combating bloating. Asparagus is rich in fiber and prebiotics that support the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, thereby balancing digestion and reducing bloating.

Ginger

Ginger contains the digestive enzyme zingibain, which helps the digestive system break down proteins. This compound can help food be digested more efficiently, reducing bloating and constipation. If you feel bloated, you can steep a few slices of ginger in a cup of hot water for 5-10 minutes and sip it.

Peppermint tea, chamomile tea

Peppermint tea and chamomile tea both help dispel gas, preventing bloating. Besides improving digestion, chamomile tea alleviates uncomfortable stomach symptoms.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a spice rich in antioxidants that can eliminate excess gas. Dr. Tien cited numerous studies showing that using cinnamon helps treat digestive problems such as bloating and gas.

According to doctors, there are many causes of bloating, including the food you eat. When experiencing bloating, review your diet and choose foods that help reduce this condition. If symptoms do not improve after adjusting your diet, you need to consult a reputable medical facility for proper diagnosis and effective treatment.
