Psychologists point to three reasons why Gen Z is prone to being fired. One common criticism is that Gen Z lacks motivation. There are complaints from previous generations that Gen Z is reluctant to work hard to achieve goals.

From the 2008 financial crisis to the COVID-19 pandemic, Gen Z has witnessed companies laying off or cutting salaries for long-term employees. This has led Gen Z to have a skeptical view that effort is sometimes not adequately rewarded.

A Deloitte report indicates that Gen Z highly values companies that are socially responsible and care about their employees. The lack of motivation among Gen Z may be their way of protecting themselves from companies that don't offer stability.

Another reason is communication. Although Gen Z is highly regarded as the digital generation, this doesn't mean they have good communication skills in a traditional work environment. Gen Z lives in the world of social media and communicates primarily through text messages, which makes many of them feel awkward when communicating in person.

In 2022, a Harvard Law School article noted that the COVID-19 pandemic had made Gen Z more passive in face-to-face interactions at work. Instead, they often communicated via text messages. This had negative consequences for fields requiring teamwork and presentation skills, not to mention the misconception that Gen Z was unconnected.

The most obvious reason why Gen Z finds it difficult to stay in a job long-term is their inability to accept and integrate into traditional work cultures that prioritize continuous working hours and immersion in work.

Previous generations worked hard and made sacrifices for their careers, accepting overtime, weekends, and even holidays to advance. But Gen Z doesn't accept this because they want balance and personal enjoyment that isn't tied to work.

Another report from Deloitte in 2023 indicated that 50% of Gen Z prioritize work-life balance when choosing a job.

Gen Z individuals always speak their minds and dislike toxic work environments. They are willing to quit if expectations aren't met. This doesn't mean they're lazy, but rather that Gen Z tends to prioritize mental health over career advancement.
